Several Taylor County track & field athletes locked up automatic qualifying spots for the Class 2-A state championships during Tuesday’s 2-A, Region 2 meet at Bardstown High School’s Garnis Martin Field.

Sophomore Tre Goodin swept the boys’ 100- and 200-meter dashes, sophomore Ryan Maynard won the 3,200-meter run and was second in the 1,600 and freshman Dalton Nunn was runner-up in the 800 run. Nunn teamed with seniors Cole Frazier and Will Miller and junior Devan Wasson to finish second in the 4x400 relay, while Maynard, Miller, Nunn and sophomore Davin Phillips took second in the 4x800.

The Cardinals finished third in the team standings, scoring 77 points.

“We came into the meet and I think for the most part the team was confident,” Taylor County coach Chris Jelks said. “We weren’t really that nervous. We went out and we did what we’ve done all year. I saw some incredible performances, so I’m happy.”

Sophomore Ciara Mosley was the Lady Cardinals’ only automatic qualifier. She won the discus throw and was second in the triple jump and shot put.

Taylor County placed sixth with 43 points.

The top finishers in each event at each regional meet automatically qualify for state, plus the next 10 top times/distances from across the state.
