A two-vehicle accident on KY 70 in the Mannsville community near Stoner Creek Road resulted in a Liberty couple passing away at the scene.

According to a report from the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office, Dewey Sturgell, 49, was operating a 2001 Ford Pickup traveling west on KY 70 just before 2 p.m. on Friday.

The report states that Sturgell was traveling behind a 1997 GMC pickup truck operated by 65-year-old Carey Stafford, also of Liberty.

As both vehicles were nearing the intersection of KY 70 and Stoner Creek Road, Sturgell attempted to pass Stafford, but as Sturgell attempted to cross back into the westbound lane, his vehicle made contact with Stafford’s and Sturgell’s vehicle left the right side of the roadway and collided with a tree.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene, as Sturgell and a passenger in the car, 43-year-old Kerri Sturgell were entrapped in the vehicle.

A helicopter was flown to the scene, but Dewey and Kerri Sturgell were declared deceased at the scene of the accident by the Taylor County Coroner’s Office.

Stafford did not suffer any injuries from the accident, according to the report.

Deputy Dickie Benningfield is the investigating officer in the accident. Deputy Brandon Wilson, Campbellsville-Taylor County EMS, and Taylor County Fire and Rescue assisted him at the scene.
