  • First sighting of Ballinger left...

Sports editors aren’t the best judge of athletic talent. But, the old saying “a blind squirrel will find a nut ever once in a while” holds true in at least this one case.
It was December of 2005 when I traveled to Russell County to watch Taylor County play Marion County in a holiday tournament basketball game.
The game before that pitted Glasgow vs. Carroll County. I found a little interest in that game since the Carroll County coach, Randy Mefford, had played basketball and golf at Campbellsville College.

  • Lady Tigers slide in MSC...

Georgetown College (30-12, 16-4) swept Campbellsville University (32-18, 14-7) softball in convincing fashion Tuesday afternoon, 6-0, 5-1.
Jordan Cornett singled in the first and Courtney Turpin singled in the second for CU’s only hits in the first game.
CU led 1-0 in the second game when Heather Oakley hit her eighth homer of the season. But Campbellsville was relegated to only three more hits  — Bailey Dillender, Brooke Boils and Kristin Benton.

  • CU baseball sweeps Cumberlands

The baseball Tigers swept their Mid-South Conference three-game series with Cumberlands over the weekend and downed Cumberland (Tenn.) on Tuesday.
After a 13-3 romp on Friday (behind Chance Kopacz’ four-RBI game), Ryan Richardson and Michael McBride hurled shutouts on Saturday.
Rusty Devitt improved to 3-0 as CU upended Cumberland (Tenn.) 9-2.
CU travels to Rio Grande this weekend.

  • Eagles upend Marion in district...

Campbellsville High School began 20th District baseball play on Tuesday with a 5-3 win at Marion County.
The Eagles struck for four in the second and added an insurance run in the sixth.
Brett Kearney went the distance for CHS with had two runs batted in as did Bradley Bates.
The Eagles shut out Green County 12-0 in the Touchstone Energy Fifth Region All “A” Classic on Friday in Greensburg before falling to Washington County 8-4 in the championship tilt on Saturday.
