  • Despain scores third straight...

    Elliott Despain and Despain Motorsports continued their winning ways on July 24 as they scored their third consecutive win of the 2009 racing season at Clinton County Speedway in Alpha, Ky.

    Despain began the night by timing in with the third quickest lap during the qualifying session and started outside the front row in his heat race. The 20-year-old racer went on to win the heat race and started on the pole of the Modified main event.

  • Cassell downs Noland in play-off

    Mike Cassell won a sudden-death play-off over Joe Noland to claim the Charles Stiles Memorial Senior Duffers championship at the Bardstown Country Club Maywood Course.

    After the Monday first round, Noland held a one-stroke lead over Tommie Brown and Buck Roberts with a net score of 65. Cassell closely followed with a net 68.

    After a fierce battle on day two of the tourney, the round ended with Noland and Cassell tied with net 133s at the end of regulation play.

  • Amazon.com Senior Special

    Cynthiana’s Mike Lenox used three birdies to win the 2009 Kentucky Senior Golf Association Amazon.com Special on Monday at Campbellsville Country Club.

    Lenox’s birdies came on three of the course’s four par 5s and another on hole No. 11, a par 4. His two-shot win over Louisville’s Ron Acree helped to edge him up the board of the KSGA Player of the Year.

    Beaver Simpson from Bowling Green took top honors in the net division of the first flight with a 74, and Don Wood led the way in the super senior division with a low gross total of 75.

  • Campbellsville Christian,...

    Campbellsville Christian defeated Elk Horn Baptist to win the Men’s Church League Tournament championship while Summersville Baptist downed First Baptist for the Coed Church crown at Veterans Memorial Park.

    Those teams joined Industrial champion UPS as the victors.

  • Tungate collects 29th feature...

    Campbellsville's Tim Tungate drove to his 29th career 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model feature victory on Friday night at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, while Bryan Barber of Greensburg won Ninth Annual Bluegrass Rumble and Brad Leake of Bardstown claimed his first-career Street Stock feature event win.

    The 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model feature event saw David Webb take the lead at the drop of the green flag at the end of lap one by just a car length over Tungate, followed by Jeff Watson, Jason Keltner and Dustin Neat.

  • Mason earns top honors on Junior...

    Morgan Mason earned Player of the Year honors for the 2009 Musselman-Dunne Junior Golf Tour.

    After competing in events across the state, she qualified for the two-day Tour Championship at Big Spring Country Club in Louisville on July 20-21 where she finished with a two-day total of 184 and runner-up honors. The tour carries a point system for each tourney played.

    Mason, along with Lindsay Shelden of Louisville and Lauren VonOhlen of Louisville, finished at the top of the point system as Co-Players of the Year in the girls' 16-18-year-old group.

  • CU names new sports information...

    Campbellsville University has named Chris Megginson, a sports editor from Columbiana, Ala., as its new sports information director, according to an announcement from Rusty Hollingsworth, director of athletics.

    Megginson will begin the position at the end of August.

    "I am pleased to announce that Chris Megginson has accepted our offer to join the athletics staff as sports information director. He has the experience and qualifications that we need to move our sports information department forward," Hollingsworth said.

  • Little League tourney an...

    For players, coaches, parents, grandparents, friends and passerby hardball lovers, nothing can stir up more excitement than Little League baseball.

    I guess it's because, from an outsider's perspective, the local program seems to be run with such love and passion.

    Miller Park is one of the nicer settings I've witnessed for games. Where else in the world can your non-playing child throw rocks in a creek with impunity? I'd like to have a nickel for every time I heard: "I thought I told you to stay out of that creek?"
