  • Morel mushrooms should be...

    Morel mushrooms should be popping up soon. This year's wet late winter and early spring should lead to a good mushroom crop if warm, sunny days appear over the next few weeks.

    Veteran "shroomers" say a late snow also forecasts more morels, and we met that qualification this year. Hopefully, this will be a good mushroom season as the past several have been less than bountiful.

  • Oklahoma City ends Tigers'...

    If Keith Adkins was looking for an off-season motivational tool, he may have found it.

    Adkins' team's run at a national tournament finals berth was cut short Monday night in Kansas City by Oklahoma City University 78-64. But that didn't take any of the edge off an exciting end to a 26-10 season.

  • Semifinal fever!

    Campbellsville University advanced to the semifinals of the men's National NAIA Basketball Tournament Saturday evening with a 74-69 win over Oklahoma Baptist.

    The Tigers rode the third straight double-double by junior Nestor Colmenares who scored 17 points and pulled down as many rebounds.

    Campbellsville will play Monday night at 9:30.

  • Tigers upset No. 6 seed Concordia

    Campbellsville University watched a nine-point halftime lead evaporate, but rode the combined 55 points by Bubba Long and Nestor Colmenares to a 72-63 upset victory over Concordia in the first round of the NAIA Division I men's national tournament in Kansas City, Mo. on Thursday.

    "It's exciting to win a game three years (at nationals) in a row, and I hope we're not done yet and not satisfied with that," said winning coach Keith Adkins.

    The Tigers have reached the round of 16 the past three years. Campbellsville played McKendree (Ill.) on Friday afternoon.

  • CU men's golf first in own...

    The Campbellsville University men's golf team captured their Spring Invitational on March 17-18 at the Old Silo Golf Club in Mt. Sterling.

    The Tiger men shot a two-day total of 589 to win the tournament with Cumberland (Tenn.) University the runner-up.

    CU seniors Jeffrey Gumm and Jeff Sullivan each shot a two-day total of 144. Gumm won medalist honors after a three-hole playoff.

  • Tiger baseballers drop two in...

    The unpredictable early-season weather has been playing havoc on the Campbellsville University baseball Tigers in coach Beauford Sanders' 18th season at the helm.

    The Tigers began the 2008 campaign with a 6-5 home win over Union (Ky.) College on Feb. 19.

    Shortstop Lee Darracott led the CU 10-hit attack with three hits while first-baseman Nick Smith and designated hitter Hector Urbaneja had two hits apiece. Smith had three runs batted in while Darracott and center-fielder Brandon Hunter scored two runs apiece.

  • Holmes playing Tavistock Cup...

    After competing in the World Golf Championships/CA Championship through Sunday in Miami, John "J.B." Holmes will play in the fifth annual Tavistock Cup at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Orlando on Monday and Tuesday.

    The Cup showcases the touring golf professional members of Isleworth and Lake Nona, two of the finest golf and country clubs in the world, in a head-to-head team competition.

  • Crystal ball sees Carolina over...

    It's happened once, twice, maybe three times during its previous 22-year trial-and-error run on the national tournament scene.

    The old crystal ball was wiped off and made his/her/its picks just after the selection committee revealed the 65 teams on Sunday night.

    It's one of those deals that the crystal ball normally changes the January picks for the entire year and this March is no different.

    The crystal ball's picks in January of Kansas, Memphis, North Carolina and UCLA to make the Final Four were exactly the number-one seeds the committee tabbed on Sunday.

  • Gumm, Cox and Taylor named all-...

    A senior, a junior and sophomore from the local scene made the Fifth Region Coaches' Association Boys' Basketball All-Region Team for the 2007-2008 season.

    Taylor County's Josh Gumm and Chase Cox are joined on the 16-player squad.

    Adair County junior Darren Ballou heads up the team as Player of the Year while Indians' head man Mark Fudge is Coach of the Year.

  • Locals have horse nominated for...

    Mr. Ruff, a 3-year-old gray/roan colt, is one of 448 nominees for the Triple Crown in thoroughbred racing this year.

    Mr. Ruff is owned by Farmer Ridge Farm, located at 213 Thoroughbred Court in Taylor County, and is nicknamed "The Bopper" because of his walking head movements when he was born in Taylor County in April, 2005 at Farmer Ridge Farm.

    It was thought at birth his long legs and awkward stance might hinder his development. However, as time passed his awkward stance would vanish and hopes of being a racing horse would improve.
