  • Gaskins grasps 44th Duffers title

    Harlan Gaskins (137) edged Scott Jessie by one stroke, and defending champion Dale Newton was another two shots back at the 44th Annual Duffers Tournament over the Aug. 2-3 weekend at Cherry Blossom Country Club and Golf Course in Georgetown, Ky.

    Steve Beard and Tom Milby tied for second-day low net with 66s while Rick Newton had the top gross score of 144 (71-73).

  • Fairview Baptist, Campbellsville...

    Fairview Baptist downed defending champion Campbellsville Christian and St. Mark Methodist in the Men's Church League Tournament while Campbellsville Christian 1 claimed the Church Coed League title in post-season softball action at Veterans Memorial Park.

    Fairview, the No. 2 seed, finished one game behind regular-season champion Elk Horn Baptist, which was upset by St. Mark's in the tourney semifinals on Monday.

  • CU raises $12,000 at annual...

    Campbellsville University raised $12,000 - the largest amount ever - at the fourth annual Big Maroon Club Athletic Boosters' auction and dinner July 31 in Winters Dining Hall with 230 people in attendance.

    Chuck Vaughn, director of the Big Maroon Club, said the record amount was raised even though there were fewer auction items, but the items sold for more.

    Vaughn said the organizers made a change this year to include fewer items in the "live" auction and to add more to the "silent" auction.

  • 29th H&W Classic belongs to...

    Spitz Seeds/Central Paving/Mizuno, based in Mt. Washington, defeated Team Toolbox (Elizabethtown) to capture the 29th Annual H&W Softball Classic on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Park.

    Spitz lost to Walkoff/Bugs (Nashville, Tenn.) in pool play but bounced back to upend Miken Merchants (Springfield) 25-14 in the single-elimination tourney.

    Team Toolbox, which lost to Spitz in pool action, downed Walkoff/Bugs twice to get another shot at Spitz.

  • 28th feature for No. 18

    Campbellsville's Tim Tungate was victorious in the 44 Auto Mart Super Late Model Feature at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown on Saturday night while Roger Cecil of Bardstown won the Fifth Annual Shorter Gardner Memorial for the WBRT 1320-AM Sportsman, Jason Wheatley of Loretto was tops in Kentucky Cooperage Modifieds and Joe David Humphrey of Loretto was best in Street Stocks.

    Tungate took the early lead in the Super Late Model feature with Scotty Earl, Johnny Wheeler, Aaron Hatton and David Webb in pursuit.

  • Minor title to the Yankees

    The Yankees won the first and if-necessary games in the best-of-three series vs. the Marlins to capture the 2008 Minor League championship at Miller Park.

    The Yankees had a regular-season record of 11-6.

  • Throckmorton retires as CU men...

    P.J. Throckmorton was honored recently with a retirement reception by the Campbellsville University athletics department after completing his final season as men's head golf coach.

    Throckmorton spent six years as the golf coach, three of those in a dual role as men's and women's coach. During his tenure at Campbellsville, he took the fourth men's team in Tiger history to the NAIA Golf Tournament this season. The Tigers won the NAIA Region XI Tournament to qualify for the nationals in what was the final year of the regional tournament format.

  • Tigers ink nine for baseball...

    Campbellsville University baseball will be adding nine recruits to the program, starting in the fall of 2008. The recruiting class is marked by speed offensively and includes a handful of pitchers that will be immediate difference makers.

    Head coach Beauford Sanders has referred to this recruiting class as exceptional as speed and power are the primary makeup. The class includes eight community college transfers and one high school signee.

  • Jackson accepts Lady Eagle hoop...

    Cameron Jackson interviewed, investigated and now has been tabbed as the new head girls' basketball coach at Campbellsville High school.

    "I'm honored and blessed to be part of Campbellsville and excited to be the head girls' coach at Campbellsvile High School," Jackson said on Thursday night in a press conference in the CHS library.

    "I did my research and I feel like this is a great community and I wanted to take the challenge," said Jackson, who played his early years at West Jessamine under current Marion County coach Tim Peterson.

  • Former standouts continue...

    Four local athletes with deep Campbellsville/Taylor County roots have been in the news this spring on the baseball scene.

    Sham Gabehart, who played for and was an assistant coach at Campbellsville, was an assistant and hitting instructor on the staff at Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge, La.

    The 34-5 Eagles, seeded No. 2, won their 10th state title for head coach M.L. Woodruff. Parkview Baptist had won five straight titles before being dethroned in 2007 by eventual champion Iowa.
