  • Lady Tigers clinch MSC regular-...

There was no net cutting or playing of Queen’s “We Are the Champions” Thursday as No. 5 Campbellsville University fended off the No. 15 University of the Cumberlands 69-61 to lock up the program’s first un-shared Mid-South Conference regular season championship since 2003.

“We didn’t want to share this with anyone this year,” Lady Tiger coach Ginger Colvin said. “We’ve battled way too long and come too far to not win this outright. This was a big win to seal a decent seed in the national tournament,”

  • Cards clip Indians 42-40

Taylor County held off Adair County 42-40 on Thursday night to advance to the Boys’ 20th District Tournament championship over the weekend and into this week’s Fifth Region Tournament at Nelson County.

The Cardinals led by five (19-14) at the intermission and had three seven-point cushions in the third quarter before the Indians fought back to knot the score at 37-37 with 3:29 left.

A pair of Chase Seaborne free throws and one charity toss by Tevin Webster made it 40-37 before Kyle Sandusky’s three-point play at 58.2.

  • Cards choose Cotton to guide...

Starting right out of high school because a neck injury prevented a college career, Curtis Cotton has been coaching football nearly half (17) of his 35 years.

On Friday afternoon, Taylor County High School hired Cotton as the Cardinals’ eighth head coach.

TCHS principal Charles Higdon Jr. recommended Cotton to the site-based council and Taylor County superintendent Roger Cook.

  • Adair County eliminates Lady...

Taylor County’s Lady Cardinals never overcame a 16-6 start and were eliminated by Adair County 58-49 in a 20th District Tournament first-round game at Campbellsville.

Junior McKenzie Martin hit a pair of lay-ups in the first 90 seconds to put the Lady Indians (17-10) in front to stay, and Chelsea Beard tallied 11 first-half points as ACHS’ lead grew to 21 (34-13) after another Martin hoop.

Rachel Riggs’ follow and two Hope Wigginton free throws around a Whitney Rodgers’ lay-up cut TCHS’ deficit to 19 (36-17) at the intermission.

  • CU rallies to down St. Catharine...

It took 33 minutes for Campbellsville University to take its first lead of the game Saturday, but once it did, the Tigers wouldn’t give it back to St. Catharine College en route to a 67-64 road victory in Springfield.

T.J. Bishop hit a lay-up with just under seven minutes left to give CU a 51-49 lead. Bishop, who scored CU’s first three points of the game, scored the rest of his game-leading 17 points in the second half.

  • Lady Tigers secure MSC title tie...

Campbellsville’s women secured at least a tie for the regular season Mid-South Conference title on Saturday by defeating St. Catharine College in Springfield 88-75. But it wasn’t a pretty win.

It was a far cry from the 112-52 pasting the Lady Tigers put on the Lady Patriots in early February when St. Catharine had only six players available because of injuries. The Lady Patriots had seven on Saturday as five players continue to nurse injuries.

  • Lady Knights roll over Lady...

The state’s top-rated Marion County’s Lady Knights began the game 16-0 and used runs of 18-0, 8-0, 36-0 and 10-0 to race past the home-standing Campbellsville Lady Eagles 88-20 in the opening game of the 20th District Tournament.

Four Lady Knight starters reached double figures, led by the 22-point effort of freshman Patrice Tonge with Makayla Epps adding 16 and front-court players Bre Elder and Andrea King 12 and 11, respectively.

Tiffany Slone hit a pair of three-pointers to lead CHS with eight points while Heather Watson added five.

  • CU completes season regular-...

The last nine years have been rough in the Highway 55 rivalry for Campbellsville University, but the eighth-ranked Tigers started the new decade off strong Thursday, downing the Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders 66-61 in front of a packed Powell Athletic Center crowd.

The win completed the first men’s and women’s basketball regular-season sweep in the rivalry for CU since 2001.
