  • Cards outscore Somerset 45-42 in...

    Taylor County opened district play Friday night with a thrilling 45-42 victory over Somerset.

    Chris Thomas took the handoff on the Cardinals' first play from scrimmage for 73 yards and a touchdown. That would be the only score of the first period as Justin Hoosier and Cody Van Meter helped contain the Briar Jumper attack.

  • Eagles pour it on in fourth for...

    Campbellsville High School's Eagles tallied 21 fourth-quarter points to begin district play with a 33-12 victory at home on Friday night.

    Lynn Camp scored first on a blocked punt, which the Wildcats recovered in the end zone.

    Michael McCubbin's 76-yard run in the second quarter knotted the score at 6-6.

    "We spread them out in the first half and made them chase us," said Eagle coach Herb Wiseman of his team's game plan. "Then in the second half, we just lined up and ran it straight at 'em."

    And run it they did.

    Both high school teams, Campbellsville and Taylor County, are at home on Friday night for their district openers while Campbellsville University hosts a non-conference tilt at Ron Finley Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

  • Bengals, Cowboys, Saints and...

    The Saints and Titans posted Saturday wins in Junior League action while the Cowboys and Bengals were victorious in Sunday's Senior League as Campbellsville Community Club Youth Football kicked off its 2008 season.

    In Junior League play:

    Saints 20, Cardinals 12

    The Saints got touchdown runs of 54, 5 and 7 yards from Tyrion Taylor in besting the Cardinals in overtime.

    Tyler Franklin kept the Cards close on TD runs of 50 and 18 yards.

    John Courtwright added the two-point conversion for the Saints.

  • Taylor County tops Campbellsvile...

    Taylor County took advantage of five Campbellsville turnovers and three Lance Turpin touchdown passes to upend their cross-town rivals 19-16 on Friday night at Dave Fryrear Field.

    "We had way too many turnovers," said Eagle coach Herb Wiseman after the game. "They're (the miscues) killing us."

    Neither team scored in the first half and neither squad had more than 100 yards of offense during the first two periods.

  • CHS, TC battle for latest...

    Some gotta win, some gotta lose, whomever loses on Friday will have another year of blues, could be the theme of every Campbellsville-Taylor County sports clash.

    And it could not be more apparent than for tomorrow's game on Dave Fryrear Field when the Cardinals visit the Eagles.

    Both teams are coming off decisive losses in their season openers and are looking for some relief before beginning their district campaigns next week.

  • Holmes picked for U.S. Ryder Cup...

    Captain Paul Azinger selected Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, J.B. Holmes and Chad Campbell on Tuesday to complete the 12-player roster for the 2008 United States Ryder Cup Team.

    The foursome, three of whom are making their Ryder Cup debuts, join eight players who had earned automatic berths Aug. 10, following the 90th PGA Championship.

    Azinger made his selections at The Radisson Martinique on Broadway in New York City, where The PGA of America was founded in 1916. He will guide the U.S. against Europe, Sept. 19-21, in the 37th Ryder Cup at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville.

  • LCA fast start dooms Eagles 56-36

    Defending Class A runner-up Lexington Christian raced out to a 21-0 lead and held off a Campbellsville comeback to post a 56-36 triumph in the Second Annual Christian Classic Bowl on Saturday.

    "If we could have just eliminated some of our early mistakes, I believe we could have won the game," Eagle coach Herb Wiseman admitted.

    "But I'm real proud of our kids not giving up early."

    After falling behind by three TDs, the Eagles began their long march back behind junior Thomas Downs and seniors Zach Altman and Michael McCubbin.

  • Bulldogs trim Tigers in debut of...

    The Campbellsville University Tigers fought hard but came up short in a 48-38 season opening loss Saturday on HIG Field to Cumberland (Tenn.) University.

    Ross Deaton had a record-breaking day for the Tigers in his collegiate debut passing 31-54 for 392 yards and a touchdown.

    Deaton, a redshirt freshman from Somerset, set the record for most pass attempts in a game, most pass completions in a game, most yards passing in a game, total number of offensive plays (70) and total number of offensive yards in a game with 452.

  • Monroe cruises past Taylor 49-18

    Taylor County opened the 2008 gridiron season on a sour note Friday, as Monroe County handed the Cardinals a 49-18 setback.

    The visiting Falcons posted 501 yards offense, controlled the line of scrimmage and forced turnovers at opportune times.

    Cardinal mentor Rodney Turpin complimented the senior dominated squad, saying, "Monroe County controlled up front on both sides of the ball."
