  • Coulter TD catch pushes Cards...

    Taylor County opened the 2008 playoffs with an exciting 29-24 triumph over the Powell County Pirates on Friday night.

    Nothing about the game came easy for the Cardinals (8-3) as the Pirates controlled the ball over 34 minutes of the contest and amassed 447 yards offense to the Cardinals' 340. Somehow, the local squad was able to make stops at key points and take advantage of their two second-half possessions to prevail and advance.

  • Evangel edges CU Tigers 78-74

    Campbellsville University hit 14 three-pointers but was only 2-9 at the free-throw line in dropping its home opener 78-74 to Evangel (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon.

    Aaron Wyatt hit five treys and led the Tigers with 20 points while Zach Allender added 15. The duo also had five rebounds apiece.

    The Tigers will host the Lou Cunningham Classic this weekend.

    CU plays Virginia Intermont on Friday (8:00) and Taylor on Saturday (4:00). Lindsey Wilson will open play each day with games against Taylor on Friday (6:00) and Virginia Intermont on Saturday (2:00).

  • Lady Tigers take two at Bethel...

    Campbellsville University made it six wins in a row with a pair of triumphs in the Bethel (Tenn.) College Classic over the weekend.

    The Lady Tigers bested William Carey 65-47 on Friday night as Whitney Ballinger had a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds) and Melly Heaton scored 11.

    On Saturday, coach Ginger Colvin's club used a 49-38 second half to clip the host team 78-75.

    Wendi Messer tallied 24 points off the bench while Courtney Danis had 18 and Ballinger 14.

    The Lady Tigers are idle until Monday, Dec. 8 when they venture to Brescia.

  • TC teams sweep road opener at...

    Taylor County High School started its 2008-2009 basketball seasons with a girl/boy doubleheader sweep on Tuesday night at Washington County.

    The Lady Cardinals began the proceedings with a 61-49 first-game victory as MeLeigha Pollock totaled 20 points and Hope Wigginton and Mercedes Cox added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

    Cayla Rucker dished out eight assists and pulled down six rebounds, third only to Elizabeth Thomas' eight and Cox's seven.

    Pooh Railey led the Commanderettes with 17 and Elizabeth Haydon had 15.

  • Tigers blank Bears 24-0

    Instead of trailing at the half like it had in the last three close losses, the Campbellsville University football Tigers held a 9-0 advantage en route to a 24-0 shutout over visiting Pikeville College on Saturday afternoon.

    Greg Fountain's 23-yard, first-quarter touchdown run and David Hon's 25-yard field goal put the Tigers (3-8) on top 9-0.

    Fountain, who missed most of the first half, returned and scored on another 49-yard jaunt after Ross Deaton had hooked up with David Mason for a five-yard score.

  • Cards next gridiron foe nearly...

    When 8-3 Taylor County hosts Estill County tomorrow (7:30) on Clay Marcum Field at Thomas Porter Stadium in the second round of KHSAA Class 3A playoffs, the Cardinals are close to facing an undefeated squad.

    The Blue and White Engineers from Irvine are 10-1 with only a 7-6 setback at district champion Breathitt County (9-2 with season-starting losses to Johnson Central and Prestonsburg) on Sept. 19 ruining a perfect campaign.

  • CU Tiger hoops continue road...

    Campbellsville University's brutal early road schedule continued with losses to Auburn Montgomery and Faulkner in Montgomery, Ala. and an exhibition setback at NCAA Division 1 Western Kentucky University on Tuesday night.

    Coach Keith Adkins' team, ranked 18th in the preseason NAIA Division 1 poll, fell 83-73 in double overtime to No. 21 Auburn Montgomery on Friday despite 22 points and 15 rebounds by senior All-American Zach Allender.

  • Samford shoots down CU 73-54

    Campbellsville could not overcome a red-hot shooting performance by Samford over the first nine minutes of a 73-54 exhibition loss in Birmingham on Thursday.

    Samford made nine of its first 10 shots from the floor to build a 17-point lead.

    "There's just no way to prepare for what they do offensively and defensively," coach Keith Adkins said. "They run such a different style of offense and some tricky defenses that are just hard to reproduce in practice."

  • Lady Tigers add three more to...

    After losing their season opener to No. 1 rated Union (Tenn.) University, coach Ginger Colvin's Campbellsville University Lady Tigers (4-1) have reeled off four in a row after weekend wins over Walsh and Daemen and a Tuesday-night triumph vs. Brescia.

    The Lady Tiger reserves, led by Wendi Messer's game-high 19, tallied 45 of their points in an 85-75 home victory over Brescia.

    Sophomore starters Courtney Danis (14) and Whitney Ballinger (11) also reached double figures as all 13 CU players scored.

  • Lady Tigers convert down stretch...

    Courtney Danis hit four free throws in the last 15 seconds to seal an 88-84 Campbellsville University Lady Tiger (1-1) victory over Robert Morris (0-1) on Friday night in the Powell Athletic Center.

    Danis led all scorers with 21 points but got good support as three other Lady Tigers scored in double figures.

    The free throws weren't Danis' only heroics as she drained a three-pointer at the intermission buzzer that gave Campbellsville a 44-41 lead.
