  • Lady Tigers roll to seventh...

    Campbellsville's 13th-ranked Lady Tiger basketball team had little trouble with Brescia on Monday night, defeating the Lady Bearcats 90-52 at the Campus Center in Owensboro.

    Brescia got off to a 10-6 lead, but Campbellsville went on a 14-0 run to lead 20-10 midway through the first half and built a 34-19 halftime lead.

    Kristi Ensimger led the Lady Tigers with 15 points while Megan Issacs added 12 and Wendi Messer 10 in the win.

  • Cox comes through in the clutch

    Senior guard Chase Cox hit a basket with 4.6 seconds remaining and Michael Coulter stole the in-bounds pass and converted two free throws as Taylor County posted a 61-57 road victory vs. Elizabethtown on Friday night.

    The Cardinals fought back from a 12-point second-half deficit with a 10-0 run to end the third quarter and took the lead when Coulter fed Lloyd Stotts for a left-wing three-pointer at 2:09 in the fourth.

    The Panthers knotted the score at 57-57 on a Chris Ulis free throw with 13.8 seconds left and just before Cox’s length-of-the-court drive.

  • CU reels off three home wins

    Evidently coach Keith Adkins' Campbellsville University Tigers needed only some steady home cooking as they swept three tilts in the Powell Athletic Center in a four-day stretch.

    The Tigers bested Virginia Intermont (79-48) and Taylor (66-64) in the Lou Cunningham Classic on Friday and Saturday before upending Spalding (64-50) in a regular-season affair on Monday.

    Senior All-American Zach Allender returned to form with 23 and 22 points, respectively, in the Lou Cunningham Classic.

  • Fifth Region hoop titles could...

    Don't be surprised if North Hardin captures the boys' and girls' Fifth Region basketball championships in 2009.

    Adair County was expected to repeat last year in the Fifth Region and Bardstown is the pre-season favorite this year. But not since North Hardin won three straight titles (2001-2003) has a school won back-to-back crowns.

    North Hardin adds Greg Johnson, who did not play last season, to LaRod King and Roosevelt Emerson to get the slight edge over Bardstown and Adair County.

  • Thomas captains this all-county...

    Never known to be the smartest person on this planet, why shouldn't I tackle another project that will only alienate some folks by picking my all-county football team for the just completed 2008 season.

    Even the most die-hard Campbellsville High School or Taylor County High School gridiron fan has to imagine what a one-school football town would look like.

  • Fairview knocks off Eagles 24-13...

    Campbellsville High School scored first, but could not overcome some costly mistakes and fell 24-13 to Fairview in first-round play-off action on Friday night at Dave Fryrear Field.

    "I thought we could get this win and move on in the play-offs," admitted CHS interim coach Dale Estes. "But we just made too many mistakes."

    The Eagles (4-7) needed only five plays to take the lead when Zach Altman used blocks from Thomas Downs and Michael McCubbin to sweep 57 yards down the left sideline.

  • Estill ends TCHS' season

    "If we can get some stops, we can score with them," admitted Taylor County High School head football coach Rodney Turpin midway in the third quarter.

    However, that was easier said than done as Estill County scored on 10 of its 11 possessions to roll past the home-standing Cardinals 73-28 in the second round of play-off action on Friday night.

    The Engineers tallied on four of their first-quarter possessions to lead 30-0 and held a 37-0 advantage with 9:25 left in the second period.

  • Lady Eagles lose opener at Green

    Green County's Lady Dragons raced out to a 16-0 lead and proved early that they are a Fifth Region contender with a 78-33 thrashing of the visiting Campbellsville Lady Eagles on Tuesday night.

    Starters Megan Hartfield (21), Kelsea Mitchell (16), Morgan Deaton (13) and Micah Jones (10) paced the GCHS attack while freshman Tiffany Slone led CHS with 15 points.

    Green County also won the junior varsity tilt 36-29 despite 13 points from Lady Eagle eighth-grader Brittany Vaught.

  • Coulter TD catch pushes Cards...

    Taylor County opened the 2008 playoffs with an exciting 29-24 triumph over the Powell County Pirates on Friday night.

    Nothing about the game came easy for the Cardinals (8-3) as the Pirates controlled the ball over 34 minutes of the contest and amassed 447 yards offense to the Cardinals' 340. Somehow, the local squad was able to make stops at key points and take advantage of their two second-half possessions to prevail and advance.

  • Evangel edges CU Tigers 78-74

    Campbellsville University hit 14 three-pointers but was only 2-9 at the free-throw line in dropping its home opener 78-74 to Evangel (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon.

    Aaron Wyatt hit five treys and led the Tigers with 20 points while Zach Allender added 15. The duo also had five rebounds apiece.

    The Tigers will host the Lou Cunningham Classic this weekend.

    CU plays Virginia Intermont on Friday (8:00) and Taylor on Saturday (4:00). Lindsey Wilson will open play each day with games against Taylor on Friday (6:00) and Virginia Intermont on Saturday (2:00).
