  • New Life Church plans fish fry

    New Life Church will host a fish fry on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

    Other events planned are a corn hole tournament, horseshoes, volleyball, hillbilly golf and live music. Prizes will be given to the winners of the corn hole tournament, horseshoes and hillbilly golf.

    The meal, which will include other foods besides fish, is free and will be served at 4 p.m.

  • Appreciating Laura

    One Sunday last fall, I attended the Laura Isaacs Appreciation Barbecue. Laura is a co-worker. At 24, she lives with her cat, Spock, loves Hello Kitty and ballerina flats.

    The impromptu barbecue, Cristy and Shemir's idea, was at Cristy's apartment. Shemir was the only one of us who had ever lit a barbecue fire before, so she did the honors.

    Cristy made about 10 pounds of potato salad and enough hamburger patties to feed 25 people, even though there were only about eight of us altogether.

    Palestine Baptist Church's senior adults took a trip to Glendale on Tuesday, May 13 and had lunch at the Whistle Stop Restaurant.     The Campbellsville High School Dance Team had its third annual summer dance clinic June 15-19 at CHS.

    The David Allen Chapter, National Service Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated Flag Day on June 14 with a luncheon at the Candlestick Restaurant.

    Army Pvt. Benjamin L. Houk II has entered basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

    Jeremy Taylor has been named a United States National Award winner in physical education.

  • Grace Notes: A family wedding story

    Last weekend I went home. Home for me is with my husband in Florida but it's also Southern California, "the O.C."

    The occasion was my niece Jennifer's wedding. She's the first one in our family to graduate college. She's beautiful, inside and out, and smart - a high school guidance counselor for at-risk teens. Her new husband, Marc, is a rookie firefighter.

    The outdoor wedding took place in San Juan Capistrano. It had a Baja, Mexico theme. My mom and dad live in Baja.

    Campbellsville Woman's Club had its annual Lawn & Garden Tour on Saturday. Eleven homes were a part of this year's tour.

  • Grace Notes: Doing the Almighty...

    We're doing the happy dance at my house these days. It started when, one day last week, I went to turn on the TV in the living room and it popped, which is never a good sound coming from a major appliance or electronic device.

    My husband had been pining for a flat-screen, high-definition TV for months and I've balked at the idea. Our TV was good enough.

    But that morning "good enough" became "dead." Later that day Barry called me at work and said, "Before you start screaming, hear me out."

    Shelli Lynn O'Banion and Christopher Michael Wilson announce their forthcoming marriage Saturday, July 11.

    Pitman Chapter #157 Order of the Eastern Star will be giving away a quilt during the July Fourth Celebration.

    Mr. and Mrs. Bernard L. Shipp of Campbellsville will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, June 18.

    Mr. and Mrs. Paul Whitehouse of Lebanon will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Sunday afternoon, June 21, from 2:30 to 4:30 at Muldraugh Hill Baptist Church.

  • Living Grace Church to host Precept...

    Living Grace Church will host a nine-week Precept Bible study led by Susan Monteleone - certified Precept Study leader - called "Standing Firm in These Last Days."

    The series will begin Wednesday, June 11 at 5 p.m.

    All who want to know the word of God and the God of the word - from seminary professors to businessmen, to housewives, to teens - attest to the invaluable help of the inductive method used in Precept.

  • Catholic reunion is this weekend

    In 1785, the first group of Catholic settlers, mostly from Maryland, came to what are now Nelson, Washington and Marion counties in Kentucky.

    Since 1990, Catholics with Maryland/Kentucky roots have gathered every other year to research and exchange information regarding their ancestry. Past reunions have taken place in Kentucky, Maryland and Missouri.

    The 2008 Maryland to Kentucky Reunion is scheduled for this weekend at St. Thomas Parish, 870 St. Thomas Lane in Bardstown.

    This year's reunion includes 660 registrants from 34 states.

  • Southern Legacy in concert June 29...

    Saloma Baptist Church will host a gospel concert on Sunday, June 29 at 6 p.m. with Southern Legacy.

    A potluck meal and fellowship hour precedes the concert at 5 p.m.

    Everyone is invited.

    Campbellsville Christian Church will celebrate "Baby Day" during the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, June 1.

    Babies less than 1-year-old will be introduced and presented a gift.

    "Righteous Acts," the Campbellsville Christian Church Youth Drama Team, will present the evening program on June 1 at 6:30 in the sanctuary.

    "Righteous Acts" is made up of 15 middle and high school students under the direction of Cari Gaddie.

    The program is free.

    Matt Wise was the winning designer of the Mannsville School KIRIS "Blow Out" T-shirt.

    Navy Seaman Brandon N. Noel recently reported for duty with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion Five, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

    Taylor County finished third in the girls' competition and fourth in boys' at the Class AA Region 4 Track and Field meet in Williamsburg on Friday.

    Lowell Avenue Baptist Church will host a community-wide youth service on Sunday, June 8.

    Steadfast will be leading the music while Andrew Eaton will deliver the message.

    Food and fellowship will follow the service, which begins at 6 p.m.

    The community is invited to attend.

  • Grace Notes - Finger food for...

    I spent four and a half days last week with my middle finger on my left hand either in a stiff brace or taped together with a neighboring finger.

    I'm not sure what happened, but I was at work Monday, typing, and I noticed my middle finger hurt every time it hit a key and then I noticed it had turned purple. The more I typed the more it turned purple and then it turned numb.

    That's not normal, I thought, and then ignored it. I'm a firm believer in la la land. Ignore things and they'll go away. Probably. Maybe, if I hope really, really long and hard enough.

  • Saloma Baptist to host 'Sunday...

    Saloma Baptist Church is celebrating the annual "Sunday at Green River Lake" on Sunday with all Sunday school, worship and various activities taking place at the Green River Lake State Park.

    A worship service will begin at 9 a.m. at the amphitheater followed by Sunday school and Bible study.

    A picnic and time of fellowship and recreation follows. The public is invited.

  • Grace Notes - The last get first...

    Recently, I cleaned out the kitchen junk drawer and came across the coveted Granola Eating Spoon. Technically, it's a sugar spoon: short and round, the perfect size for eating cereal, especially granola, because the raisins don't fall off the sides.

    Years ago, for some reason everyone in my family constantly fought over that spoon, and one person in particular went so far as to deliberately get up earlier than anyone else just to be the one to get it before anyone else could.

    It was utterly childish and sparked even more childish squabbles:

    Navy Airman Recruit Kyle D. Graves, son of Murrell D. and Gertie S. Graves of 704 Hatcher Road, Campbellsville, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

    The Lake Cumberland Area annual regional FFA banquet was May 7 at Lindsey Wilson College.

    The Harmony Homemakers met on Tuesday, May 12 at the Home of Betty Williams and Shirley Young as co-hostess.

    Plans are under way for the very first 24-hour Relay for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society.

  • Former Campbellsville woman stars...

    Millions of viewers watched DeAnna Pappas, 26, formerly of Campbellsville, suffer through a painful, last-minute rejection by Brad Womack on the last season of "The Bachelor" - earning her the sympathy of women everywhere.

    Now Pappas will have the last laugh as the tables are turned and she gets to choose from among 25 bachelors in her own bid for true love.

    Pappas is back - and this time it's all up to her - as the fourth edition of the female version of ABC's popular romance reality series premieres tonight.
