    Merrimac Christian Church will host a pig roast and wagon ride on Sunday beginning at 10 a.m.

    There will also be a potluck and offering, with proceeds collected going toward Kosair Children's Hospital.

  • The Garry Polson Family to visit...

    The Garry Polston Family will be performing at Mannsville United Methodist Church on Sunday at 7 p.m.

    Everyone is invited to attend.

    This Kentucky based group presents a concert of southern harmonies, including old hymns and songs written by the Polstons and others who write exclusively for the family. Their acapella arrangements are a favorite among their listeners, as well as piano numbers for some down home singing and guitars and banjo for some pickin' and grinnin'.

  • First Baptist hosting Back to...

    First Baptist Church is hosting its second annual Back to School Bash this weekend.

    On Saturday, a youth carnival will take place at the church from noon to 7 p.m. The first 75 youth to arrive will receive free school supplies.

    There will be food, games and more.

    On Sunday, the Youth Gospel Explosion will take the outdoor stage at Miller Park beginning at 5 p.m.

    There will be singing, dancing, rapping and stepping.

    Special guests will also include S.W.A.T, U.N.I.T.Y. and others.

  • CU signs partnership with Zion...

    Campbellsville University

    Campbellsville University and the Zion District Association of Baptists, and its Bible Institute, signed an agreement recently to grant academic credit for courses taught at the Bible Institute.

    The Institute is located at Jacob Grove Baptist Church in Summersville. The agreement begins with the 2008-2009 academic year, according to the Rev. John Chowning, CU vice president for church and external relations and executive assistant to the president.

  • Beth Moore satellite broadcast set...

    Bethlehem Baptist Church in Greensburg will be hosting a Living Proof Live event on Aug. 1-2. The event will be broadcast live via satellite from Louisville.

    Beth Moore is one of the nation's leading Bible teachers. At the age of 18, Moore sensed God calling her into ministry. She graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a degree in political science and later received an honorary doctorate in humanities from Howard Payne University. In 1978, she married Keith Moore. They have two daughters.

  • Palestine Baptist plans fundraiser...

    Palestine Baptist Church is hosting a luncheon to fund a mission trip to New Orleans.

    The lunch will be delivered on Friday, Aug. 1 to businesses or companies that place five or more orders.

    On the menu is a ham and cheese sub sandwich, chips, cookie, bottled water and a packet of condiments. The cost is $5 per lunch.

    Amanda Regina Mayes, a senior at Taylor County High School, is the summer intern for the Taylor County Conservation District.

    Air Force Airman 1st Class Jaclyn C. Ennis has graduated from basic training at Lockland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

    Kentucky Utilities will have a retirement reception Wednesday, July 29 for William "Willie" White and George E. Gupton. White is retiring with 32 years of service while Gupton has 41 years with KU.

    These are ordinary days. That's what a Catholic friend told me. In the Catholic calendar, in between all the fancy days like Advent and Lent, Epiphany, Easter and Pentecost, the days are called ordinary days.

    Plain old days. Just ordinary. Nothing fancy. Kind of regular.

    Campbellsville University is offering an online 27-hour program for a certificate in Christian ministry beginning with the fall 2008 semester.

    "We are very pleased to be offering the certificate in Christian ministry as an online option," said Dr. Michael V. Carter, CU president.

    "This illustrates Campbellsville University's commitment to serving the needs of pastors and church leaders in Kentucky and beyond with an additional option to secure good theological training while continuing their ministry and careers."

    Buster and Carl Hall of New Columbia Road in Campbellsville recently received the Master Conservationist award from the Taylor County Conservation District.

    Ssg. and Mrs. Alan Arvin Pike of Fort Knox, Ky. spent the Fourth of July weekend with his mother, Anne, and Paul Fraim.

    Terri Fleming will be the guest speaker at the July meeting of the Campbellsville Fellowship of Aglow International.

    Brandon Curry gets the imaginary fireman award from Dennis Champagne, coach of the 12-year-old Little League All Stars.

  • Truth Tabernacle wins float contest

    "Abe Lincoln: A Bridge Between Borders" was the theme for this year's winning float in the Campbellsville Fourth of July Celebration's AutoSmart Parade Float Contest.

    The float was designed and built by members of Truth Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church. It portrayed aspects of both the North and South during the Civil War era.

    On the "South" side of the float, Matt Coomer, dressed as a Confederate soldier, guarded an agricultural scene with cotton fields, pine tress and live chickens in an antique chicken coupe.

  • Bluegrass gospel singing is Saturday

    White Oak Community Church will host the Living Waters third annual bluegrass gospel singing on Saturday.

    The line-up of singers is:

    Noon to 1 p.m., The Irvin Family; 1 to 2 p.m., New Beginning; 2 to 3 p.m., The Robertson Family; 3 to 4 p.m., The Roy Family; 4 to 5 p.m., Bluegrass Pioneers; 5 to 6 p.m., Only By Grace; and 6 to 7 p.m., Living Waters.

    The church is located off KY 80, between Russell and Adair counties. Signs will be posted.

    Guests should bring a lawn chair and a covered dish.

    The other morning my friend and co-worker Cristy and I devised a solution for all the major problems of the universe.

    Everybody stop.

    Just stop. Take a breath. Step back. Chill out.

    Politicians, stop politicking. Forget about focus groups and pork spending and back room deals and war room strategies. Democrats aren't evil and neither are Republicans, so stop treating people with whom you disagree as enemies. We're all Americans, so stop!

  • Lewis & Lewis coming to...

    Singing/songwriting duo Lewis & Lewis from Nashville, Tenn. will be performing their hit song "Come On Down To The Farm" on Saturday, July 19 at Fairview Baptist Church in Mannsville.

    The concert begins at 7 p.m.

    Although it has been one of the most requested songs on the King of Kings Radio network in Somerset, the song was shunned by many stations because of its controversial view of same-sex marriage. Many stations have since added it to their play-lists after the success of the couple's humorous music video posted on the Internet.

    Brandon DeShawn Allen of Louisville received a bachelor of science degree on Sunday, May 31 from Centre College in Danville, Ky.

    Kyle Godsey has been named a United States National Award winner in physical education.

    The Taylor County High Future Farmers of America Chapter attended a week of camp at FFA Leadership Training Center in Hardensburg, Ky.

    The annual Kilby family and friends reunion was Saturday, June 27 at Salem Baptist Church.

  • Grace Notes: Small churches, big...

    As I write this, it's Elizabeth Weimer's birthday. I've never met her and don't know who she is, but I know July 1 is her birthday because I visited her church last Sunday night and it was in the bulletin.

    My husband and I had visited Yankeetown Community Church as guests of Barbara Arnold, whom I had never met either. She has been e-mailing me for about a year or more, inviting me to visit their church one Sunday night.

    Finally, I marked my calendar for Sunday, June 29, the night of their church's "singspiration" program, and gave Barbara my word that I'd come.

    John David Inman of Campbellsville is among 447 students at Eastern Kentucky University named to the president's list for spring semester study.

    Samantha Floyd, 3, won first place in the Crusade for Children baby contest at Kroger, East Broadway. She is the daughter of Doug and Sharon Floyd of Campbellsville.

    Dr. James Watkins was recently certified by the American Board of Surgery.

  • Grace Notes: Confessions of an...

    I don't know this from experience, but I'm told all it takes is one hit of crack to become addicted. But that's not my addiction.

    For me, it's watching food shows on TV. Not the how-to-cook shows, but the restaurant shows like "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives" on the Food Network or "Food Paradise" on the Travel Channel.
