    Mr. and Mrs. W. Ewing Knifley of Campbellsville will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 30. The Knifleys were united in marriage Aug. 28, 1948.

    Carl and Yvonne Stropolis of Casey Creek, Ky., will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday, Aug. 28.

    Willie White and George Gupton have retired from Kentucky Utilities. Gupton had been employed 41 years, and White for 32 years.

    Lillie Mae Gray Berry, 85, of South Bend, Ind., died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in South Bend, Ind.

  • Gospel concerts set for this weekend

    Terry Milby of Cross Over Ministries will host two free country and southern gospel concerts this weekend. Tomorrow, from 7 to 10 p.m. ET, a concert will take place at the IGA parking lot beside McDonald's in Columbia. Singers will include The Coffee Family, Jim Roberts and Milby.

    On Saturday, a concert will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. at Wal-Mart Supercenter in Campbellsville. Singers will be Dennis Bowling, Joe Milby and Terry Milby. Door prizes will be given away during both events.

    Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Graybeal will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 23 at East Campbellsville Church of God.

    Kelli Ann O'Banion of Bardstown became the bride of Allan Ray Bertram of Campbellsville in a June 27 ceremony at South Campbellsville Baptist Church.

    Michael Schuhmann of Campbellsville is one of more than 809 students participating in the cooperative education program at Mississippi State University.

  • From the Heart in concert

    From the Heart will be in concert Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Campbellsville Christian Church. From the Heart sings throughout Central Kentucky and is featured annually at the July Fourth Celebration in Campbellsville. The group is composed of Gail Godsey, Krisinda Jeffries, Darlene Netherland, Debbie Lawson and Linda Mings. The concert is free and the community is welcome to attend.

  • CU releases chapel schedule for fall

    Campbellsville University's chapel series has been released for fall 2008, according to Ed Pavy, director of campus ministries and chair of the chapel committee.

    Chapel takes place each Wednesday at 10 a.m., and the public is invited to attend. The sessions are in the new Ransdell Chapel.

    Chapel is designed to provide opportunities for corporate worship and exposure through of a variety of informative speakers and presentations.

  • T-shirt religion

    Every summer, the Christian Bookseller's Association has a huge trade show where book publishers and sellers of religious gifts congregate and attempt to ply their wares to owners of Christian bookstores and gift shops.

    It's been a few years since I attended one, and even though this year's show was in nearby Orlando, I was out of town and didn't go.

    Consequently, I missed one of the most exquisitely enjoyable aspects of this trade show - the rows of Christian witness items, snarkily referred to by the publishing side of the building as "Jesus junk alley."

  • Mannsville United Methodist plans...

    Mannsville United Methodist Church will host a corn hole tournament on Saturday, Sept. 6.

    Registration begins at 1 p.m. with the tournament starting at 1:30.

    Team fee is $40. Prizes will be $200 for first place; $100 for second; and $50 for third.

    All proceeds from the tournament will go to the church's building fund.

    Today is a holy day. Some churches designate certain days as holy days of obligation, which (I think) means obligatory attending of services on days you otherwise wouldn't.

    But today, for me at least, is a holy day of non-obligation, of free will and pleasure.

    It's raining, although that doesn't particularly make it holy. It does help, however. At least today. At least that's what I think.

  • Campbellsville Baptist to host...

    Campbellsville Baptist Church will host "No Man Left Behind 2008" tomorrow and Saturday in the Christian Life Center.

    On Friday, there will be a fish fry dinner beginning at 6 p.m. Guest speaker will be Morris Anderson, evangelist and big game hunter, at 6:30. Door prizes will include a $2,500 hunting excursion.

    On Saturday, the church will host a corn hole tournament, car show, golf, fishing, bike rides (both motorcycles and bicycles), bench press competition and more.

    Lunch and closing will be at 12:30 p.m.

    Tamirra Danelle Smith of Campbellsville competed in the Miss Kentucky USA pageant July 18 in Paducah and came home with the Miss Congeniality award.

    Philip and Geneva Corbin of Campbellsville will celebrate their 69th wedding anniversary on Aug. 17.

    Daniel A. Dicken has enlisted for three years in the United States Army and will be trained as a utilities equipment repairer.

    Kecia Gray and Joshua Davis were honored with a dinner and shower on June 27. The couple was married July Fourth.

    Sarah Raikes, family and consumer sciences teacher at Campbellsville High, has been chosen as the 1998-1999 Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher of the Year.

    Doris Kearney Gray, 59, of Buckner Street, Campbellsville, died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, in Greensburg after an illness.

    Robinson Chapel Church will be hosting homecoming services and welcoming its new pastor, Bro. and Mrs. Bobby Sinclair and family, on Sunday, Aug. 10.

    The day will begin at 10 a.m. ET.

    Featured singers will be "The Chimney Rock" from Somerset. There will be a potluck meal after the service.

  • Sober justice

    To hold the destiny of another human being in your hand - to the extent that one can - is a humbling thing.

    Last week I served my first jury duty.

    Although I'm free to talk about the details of the case, I'm choosing not to. The details aren't relevant to the point I want to make.

    Before the trial, I joked with my friends that I had been practicing.

    "Guilty!" I'd yell and jab my finger in the air. "Off with their heads!"

    I didn't think it would be all that difficult to come to a decision about the case. Yes or no. Guilty or not guilty.

    Kaitlin Mardis celebrated her fourth birthday with a party at her home.

    Army Pvt. Philip E. Gunsaules Jr. has entered basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
