Ruth Gibson Ford is presented with a certificate for 94 years of membership on Aug. 24 at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Ted Beam, pastor, made the presentation. Ford will be 100 years old on Nov. 24.

Raikes Hill Baptist Church will host Vacation Bible School from Monday, Oct. 6 through Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Chris and Lisa Caulk, Campbellsville, announce the birth of a daughter, Vivian Grace, at 2:32 p.m. Friday, Sept 11 at the University of Kentucky Hospital, Lexington.

Lucille Shives was surprised with a party Sept. 19, given by her children.

Terry W. Gibson Jr. of Campbellsville has enlisted for four years in the United States Army and will be trained as a chaplain assistant.

Ruth Ann Johnson, 70, of Apache Street, Campbellsville died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington after an illness.

Carrying the Torch Ministries in Columbia will host "Prophetic Conference 2008" from Thursday, Oct. 9 through Saturday, Oct. 11.

The services will begin at 7:30 ET nightly.

Speakers will include Apostle Curtis Moore and Prophetess Brenda Thomas, both of Georgia.

Carrying the Torch Ministries is located at 415 Wain St. in Columbia.

The community is invited to attend.

I was 11 years old when God died. The April 8, 1966 cover of Time magazine declared his death, or at least speculated by asking "Is God Dead?"

I was too young to pay attention to the question. At 11, I only wanted to beat Paul Pechner in spelling. But it's a question that lots of people have been asking in one form or another throughout history. Maybe not, "Is he dead?" but "Is he relevant to my life?"

We are, above all, supremely self-absorbed.

Today, I looked up the 1966 Time cover story, "Toward a Hidden God," and read it. It could've been written in 2008.

Bible Baptist Tabernacle of Campbellsville honored 27 grandparents with a special service on Sunday, Sept. 7, Grandparents Day. All grandparents present were given a special gift. Also, Richard and Gracie Jeter of Campbellsville were honored as Bible Baptist's first Grandparents of the Year. A letter of appreciation from their granddaughter, Erin Arnett, was read in their honor.

Flatwoods Separate Baptist Church will host its 15th annual camp meeting Friday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 28.

The church is located on KY 61, 5 miles south of Columbia.

Friday - Bro. Charles Cook of Morgantown at 10 a.m.; Bro. Gerald England of Sparta, Tenn., at 2 p.m.; and Bro. Timmy Shirley of Greensburg at 6:30 p.m. with singing by Friendship Baptist Church of Jonesville.

Every church has one and mine is no exception - a matriarch or mother of the church.

It's not a title or position someone campaigns for or is appointed to, but it's a role someone becomes by virtue of her love and faith and selfless faithfulness.

In my church, that would be a tiny pipsqueak named Betty Santana. I always tell Betty that the reason I like her so much is because I tower over her. The truth is, even though she's only about 4-foot-9 or so, she towers over everyone at my church, me included.

John Hansford and Matthew Morrell of Campbellsville along with three members of River of Life Church in Springfield are leaving tomorrow for a mission trip to a village in Tanzania, East Africa.

Hansford and his wife, Candace, lived in Tanzania for about six months before coming to Campbellsville.

"They just don't have the resources there to accomplish what they need," Candace Hansford said. "So we partner with the local pastor there to help provide what the Lord lays on his heart."
