  • Black History Month: Part 3

    Ice cubes floating in water. Rust on a vehicle. A rock slide. Science is everywhere. Anthony Farris knows that and so do his students at Campbellsville Elementary School.

    "I try to look beyond what I see and think about the scientific aspect."

    Farris, 47, said he strives to get his students to think that way, too.

    "I want them to not just see what's there, but to think deeper, to think about the how and why."

  • Concert to benefit The Caring Place

    From the Heart, a ladies ensemble from Campbellsville, will be performing at Campbellsville Baptist Church on Friday, March 7.

    The group is made up of Gail Godsey, Darlene Netherland, Krisinda Jeffries, Debbie Lawson and Linda Mings. The Rev. Tim Shockley provides accompaniment.

    The performance, which begins at 7 p.m., will benefit The Caring Place, a shelter for abused women and children in Marion County. Admission is free, though an offering will be taken.

  • 'Don't forget about...

    I have a theory that life revolves around dinner. For example, every morning, right after breakfast and before I've even eaten lunch, I'll ask my husband, "What do you want for dinner?"

    Recently, we wanted to get together with some friends - so we went out to dinner. And while we ate dinner we talked about other dinners we've eaten and restaurants we haven't yet tried but plan on going to - for dinner.

  • First Baptist plans special service...

    First Baptist Church on Broadway will host a B.O.M.B. - Bringing Our Men Back - service on Sunday.

    The goal of the service is encourage men to be more involved in the church and community.

    The Cleveland Street Dancers will be the featured guests.

    The service begins at 11:15 a.m. with Sunday school beginning at 10 a.m.

  • New clothing store will provide...

    Cover Me Clothing Store will host its grand opening today at 10 a.m. at 704 E. Broadway, beside First Baptist Church.

    The store, a nonprofit organization, is for people who are in immediate need of clothing items due to fire, eviction or other emergency situations.

    Donations are also welcome to help replenish items.

  • Joiner delivers annual CU Martin...

    The Rev. Gerald Joiner, Campbellsville University alumnus and member of the CU Church Relations Council, said, in a recent address, that he believes Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would not be satisfied with the overall statistics today, which show far too many young black men in prisons and far too many teen pregnancies among young black women.

    Joiner, a 1975 graduate of CU, delivered the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Worship Service in Campbellsville University's Ransdell Chapel on Wednesday,Jan. 23.

  • Learning to be the forgiven

    Good news! Thanks to the marvels of modern science we now know that forgiveness is not only good for the soul, but it's good for the body, too.

    According to results from a forgiveness study conducted at Stanford University, those who go through "forgiveness interventions" - sessions in which people who have been hurt are encouraged to develop more positive feelings toward their offenders - can improve cardiovascular function, lessen chronic pain, relieve depression, lower blood pressure and improve overall health.

  • Black History Month Part 1: Racism...

    No matter how busy her days get, Wanda Washington always makes time for her family.

    Not only is she a wife and mother of four, she has a full-time job as an in-home therapist at Adanta, she works part-time as coordinator of Greater Campbellsville United, she is president of the Campbellsville Business and Professional Women and an assistant regional director for BPW and she is district president for the Kentucky PTA.

    And if that's not enough, Washington, 54, also teaches an adult Sunday school class and is a member of the usher board at Pleasant Union Baptist Church.

  • St. Thomas Church plans Lenten...

    St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 116 S. Columbia Ave., will present a series of programs during the Lenten season (40 days prior to Easter) titled "Caring for God's Creation."

    "We hope to encourage those attending to shape their own personal theology for understanding and caring for the many gifts God has given us - our land, our food chain, all of God's people, as a way of broadening our efforts to reach out to God's world," said the Rev. Karl Lusk, pastor.

  • Baptist Campus Ministries to host...

    Baptist Campus Ministries at Campbellsville University will host the 14th annual dinner theater, "Welcome to the Table," on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Winters Dining Hall of the E. Bruce Heilman Student Complex.

    The program, an oral and visual presentation including sounds and images from the CU historical archives, will be presented by Campbellsville University students.

    The cost will be $15 per person or $25 for a couple with all proceeds going toward domestic and international missions.

  • Recovering 'nicely'

    I am a recovering nice person. As a former nice person, I rarely said no to anything, even (and especially) to things I really, really, really didn't want to do.

    Because I couldn't stand the thought of someone possibly thinking badly of me for saying no, I've done some things I had no business doing - heading up committees, teaching a class, organizing a rummage sale.

  • Churches plan joint Ash Wednesday...

    Three local congregations will observe the beginning of the Lenten season, the 40 days preceding Easter, with an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. on Feb. 6 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 116 S. Columbia Ave.

    Bethel First Presbyterian Church, Fannie Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church and the host congregation will join in the traditional Ash Wednesday liturgy and imposition of ashes; the Rev. Jim Murphy, pastor of Bethel First Presbyterian Church, will be the preacher. Pastors Delmetria Cayson-Combs and Karl Lusk will be the worship leaders.

  • Hope by the cupful

    The day my husband's hope shattered I heard the crash and came running.

    He was in the kitchen replacing the fluorescent light bulbs over the sink, and when he went to put back the plastic cover, it slipped from his hands and fell, hitting his favorite coffee cup that was on the counter.

    The cup went sailing and hit the tile floor, breaking into too many pieces to put back together.

    Yeah, yeah. It's just a coffee cup and doesn't warrant such melodrama.

    But it does.

  • Noted theologian serving as scholar...

    Baptists who want to know more about their heritage and history will be excited to learn that Campbellsville University has a world-class Baptist historian returning as scholar in residence, according to Dr. John Hurtgen, dean of the School of Theology at CU.

    Dr. Morgan Patterson is a historian whose specialty is Baptist history. He has written for the Encyclopedia of Southern Baptists, Baptist History and Heritage and a number of other publications that focus on either church history or Baptist history in particular.

  • First Baptist hosts R.E.A.C.H....

    First Baptist Church is celebrating 160 years of ministry designed to R.E.A.C.H.

    R.E.A.C.H. is an acronym for relevant teaching and preaching, energetic evangelism and worship, assimilating new believers, creative ministries and missions and helping humanity.

    R.E.A.C.H. Sunday will take place this Sunday beginning at 4 p.m.

    Special guests are the Rev. Skip Alexander and Campbellsville Baptist Church. Everyone is invited to attend.

  • Mt. Roberts hosting faith sharing...

    Mt. Roberts Baptist Church is hosting a faith sharing training course titled "The Way of the Master."

    The course began on Jan. 20 and will continue each Sunday through March 9. Classes begin at 6 p.m.

    The church is located at 989 Mac Pittman Road in Campbellsville.

  • CHS to host prayer walk

    A prayer walk will take place Sunday at Campbellsville High School.

    The community is invited to attend the event, which is from 2 to 3 p.m.

    Attendees should meet in the gym at 2 for opening remarks and prayer. Then, the crowd will dismiss to pray over various parts of the school, reconvening at around 2:50 to close.

    Feel free to come and go as you need. The front and back doors of the gym will be open.

  • MLK celebration is Sunday

    The Ecumenical Ministerial Alliance of Campbellsville will host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 20, beginning at 6 p.m.

    The site for the celebration will be the Ransdell Chapel on the campus of Campbellsville University. The annual march will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Campbellsville Middle School and end at the Ransdell Chapel.

    The Rev. Jacqueline King will be the guest preacher. King is the pastor of Stoner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Louisville.
