Library kicks off summer reading...

 

About 200 children signed up on Saturday to participate in the Taylor County Public Library's annual summer reading program.

The program is themed "Dig into Reading."

Library staff said that amount is on track to beat last year's record of nearly 600 who participated.

This is the first year the library has hosted a kickoff for its program. There were games, bubbles, face painting, snow cones and hot dogs, and the first 100 children who signed up received a free book.

Goodin now has five D-1...

Taylor County High School’s Quentin Goodin did not make the USA 16U Men’s Developmental National Team, but it has not dampened another solid summer for the Cardinal sophomore-to-be.
Goodin was one of 30 players trying out for the 12-player travel team last week in Colorado Springs, Colo. from the classes of 2015 and 2016.
However, the 6-2 Goodin will go back in October for a training session and will be invited for a try-out for the 17U team next July.

Skilled workers wanted

Manufacturers in the area say there aren't enough employees in the community with the skills to work for them, even though there are more than 1,000 unemployed in the county.

Taylor County's top economic development official says there are efforts in progress, however, to make training available to see potential employees become more ready for the workforce.

Campbellsville/Taylor County Economic Development Authority Executive Director Ron McMahan gave an update on economic development at last Tuesday's regular Taylor County Fiscal Court meeting.

If you see something, say...

At a recent Homeland Security meeting, I heard about the "If you see something, say something" campaign. The initiative was created to encourage people to report suspicious activity in their community.

The "See Something, Say Something" campaign was developed to address terrorism happening in our country. While it's hard for me to imagine that there could be terroristic activity going on around here, I understand that it's not outside the realm of possibility.

The advice given by this initiative should be considered by everyone.

Gettin' Fit

 

About 50 people biked and walked to school on Wednesday, May 8, as part of Get Fit Taylor County week.

Participants met at the Taylor County Judicial Center and walked a mile to Campbellsville Middle School.

Campbellsville Mayor Tony Young and Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers, volunteers and parents participated.

The staff at Taylor Regional Hospital Wound Healing Center recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. The health care specialists at the center provide a treatment plan designed specifically for the patient's individual needs. The center has a healing rate of more than 95 percent.

Food Inspections for June 6

The following businesses were inspected by the Lake Cumberland District Health Department using the scale below.

• 85 to 100, pass inspection.

• 70 to 84, business must be reinspected within 30 days.

• Less than 70, a suspension of permit notice is sent to owner; if owner doesn't reply within 10 days, the permit will be revoked and the business will be closed.

Aldridge discusses Medicare with...

 

Teresa Lynn Aldridge of American Mobility in Campbellsville recently met with senators and representatives in Washington, D.C., to discuss Medicare issues.

Aldridge traveled with other Kentucky Medical Equipment Suppliers Association members.

She was recently elected to serve on the association’s board for the state of Kentucky.

Doing your best during adversity

Recently, I came home from work one day and felt a sharp pain in my stomach. It was a familiar pain, one that has occurred eight times over the past 17 years. Each time, I was hospitalized for a number of days until the blockage dissolved.

But this time would be different and much more challenging. This time I needed surgery. The surgery went well, but the recovery time was lengthy and unexpected. Bad things happen at the most inconvenient times.

Smiths win Finest Farm Family...

 

It's what he loves to do. It's also what his father and grandfather loved.

Barry Smith and his family have a 300-acre farm on Owl Creek Road. About 100 beef cattle graze the land.

"Just like to farm," Smith said. "Got that from my dad, I guess."

Smith's grandfather built the farm in 1929. After someone else owned the property for a while, Smith purchased the farm in 2002. He lives there with his wife, Kim, and two children, Rylen, 14, and Dwight, 18.
