Jury trial set in infant murder case

Their peers are expected to decide in October whether Dale and Brianna Brucker murdered her 3-month-old baby.

Brianna Brucker, 20, of 109 Mill St. in Campbellsville, was in court on Tuesday to ask a judge to schedule a jury trial in her murder case.

Brucker and her husband, Dale, 26, also of 109 Mill St., are charged with murdering 3-month-old Charles Brett Hayden Jr., Brianna's son and Dale's stepson.

Chewing tobacco tax going down

 

Smokeless tobacco users who buy chewing or "spit" tobacco such as Kentucky-produced Red Man and Mammoth Cave, can expect to pay a bit less starting in August, when Kentucky's tax on chewing tobacco decreases from roughly 41 cents per pack to 19 cents.

House Bill 361, passed on March 22, is mostly remembered for establishing medical review panels that can potentially lower liability costs for long-term care facilities, but the bill also contains a provision that changes the tax on chewing tobacco from a percentage tax to a unit tax.

Fired teacher appeals case

After a judge decided not to change his mind about dismissing the case, the teacher who sued Campbellsville school officials is now taking her case to the state's Court of Appeals.

The former Campbellsville middle and high school teacher first filed suit in 2011, claiming she was fired, but not told why she had lost her job.

Lexington attorneys J. Follace Fields II and Carrie C. Mullins filed a complaint on Angela Brasser's behalf on Nov. 18, 2011, in Taylor Circuit Court.

Riggs pleads not guilty to murder

The man who allegedly shot and killed another Campbellsville man has been denied a request for his $500,000 cash bond to be lowered, which would have given him a chance at freedom while his murder case moves forward in court.

Crusade for Children

 

Residents donated nearly $27,600 to the annual Crusade for Children fundraiser at roadblocks over the weekend.

Campbellsville and Taylor County Fire & Rescue personnel and volunteers manned the roadblocks.

Money used will go toward helping special needs children in Taylor County and across the state.

 

Girl scouts, craft store donate blankets to TRH

 

Taylor County Girl Scouts and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores recently donated blankets to Taylor Regional Hospital Surgical Center pediatric patients.

The scouts made the blankets, with help from Jo-Ann's.

How healthy are Taylor Countians?

 

The results are in, and there are some issues that need to be addressed when it comes to Taylor Countians' health.

Last fall, residents were asked to take a short survey to give their thoughts about various health-related issues in the community.

The goal of Taylor Regional Hospital and Taylor County Healthy Living Coalition's community health assessment survey was to identify health problems in the Taylor County community and determine what strategies can help alleviate those problems.

CMS principal search continues

The search is still on for a new Campbellsville Middle School principal, and the goal is still to name a new leader by July 1.

David Petett, who has served as CMS principal since July 2010, is now director of district-wide services for the Campbellsville School System.

Campbellsville Superintendent Mike Deaton has said the change will allow Petett the opportunity to impact the entire district, not just CMS students.

With Petett now in his new position, Deaton said, applications are being accepted for the CMS leader position through Sunday.

Campbellsville Police get grant for body armor

 

Campbellsville Police officers won't have to worry about affording body armor for several years to come after learning recently that they were awarded a grant from the Law Enforcement Protection Program administered by the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security.

The department received $12,100, the cost to supply body armor for its 22 officers.

Farmers can help soil quality

The Natural Resources Conservation Service's Conservation Stewardship Program will provide about $175 million in funding for up to 12.6 million additional acres enrollment this year.

Although applications are accepted all year, farmers, ranchers and forestland owners interested in CSP should submit applications by June 14 to their local NRCS office to ensure they are considered for this year's funding.
