Stay safe Memorial Day weekend

Tomorrow is the beginning of a much-anticipated three-day weekend, thanks to Monday being Memorial Day.

A day set aside for honoring those loved ones who are no longer with us, Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer.

While many of us will experience some sadness this weekend as we place lovely flower arrangements on the tombstones of our loved ones and listen quietly as the names of people who died in the last year are read in church, we also look forward to spending time with our families and having some fun in the sun.

How I became a tree hugger

"What are you doing, Dad?" my son asked when he called me on his cell phone.

I was sitting on our back patio, admiring the work I'd done, having just planted the first third of my garden with the non-genetically modified seeds I had oh-so carefully selected. I wanted to come as close as I could to having an organic garden.

Then just as I as I leaned back to relax, I stood up straight, squinting at the tractor spraying the field behind my house. It was coming closer and closer to my garden.

New laws help fight prescription drug problem

I've shared with you many statistics over the last couple of years about Kentucky's prescription drug abuse epidemic.

At the time of 2012 legislation aimed at cracking down on questionable pain-management clinics or so-called "pill mills," 1,000 Kentuckians were dying each year from pain pill overdose.

I'm glad to report that 2012 and 2013 legislation is making a noticeable difference in the amount of narcotics being prescribed - and abused - in the commonwealth.

Reader wants park operated by private company

I wonder if anyone has ever thought of privatizing Miller Park. I say this from strictly an economic angle.

The park costs the city money, about $250,000 per year, unless the budget is amended to cover said costs. By cutting the budget by $250,000, economic stimulus would soon follow.

Resident receives scholarship

 

The Brothers of Pitman Masonic Lodge No. 124 recently selected Chelsea Pike of Campbellsville to receive a $250 travel scholarship to help with expenses of participating in the 69th Anniversary Commemorations of the D-Day Invasion in Normandy, France, with the Lindsey Wilson College Singers.

The singers represent LWC as a performing arts ensemble. The mixed choir performs repertoire from all eras, specializing in a cappella anthem literature.

Durham murder trial set for October

Jesse Durham is now scheduled to face jurors in August and October.

Durham, the Campbellsville man accused of killing his great-grandmother and assaulting a jail deputy while incarcerated, appeared in court on Tuesday for another hearing in his cases.

Dressed in sweats and shackled with handcuffs and leg chains, Durham, 21, of 102 Eads St., appeared before Taylor Circuit Court Judge Allan Bertram for a hearing that lasted six minutes.

TRH hosts Blessing of the Hands

 

Holding out her hands, he places drops of oil on each and asks God to bless them.

“The lives that they touch, may they be blessed,” he said, as they prayed together.

Beside him, another clergy member asks for God’s blessings upon a nurse’s hands.

Local company's products help care for exotic animals

 

When Cox Shavings opened in 1998, general manager Jim Noe was prepared to serve the needs of horse farms, dairies and chicken farms scattered throughout Kentucky and surrounding states.

He never expected the shavings produced in Campbellsville would one day line the dens of exotic animals such as lions, tigers and zebras. “I never dreamed that we’d be going into that,” Noe said.

But that changed when Noe got a phone call from one of his regular dealers, Metzger’s Country Store in Simpsonville.
