Today's Opinions

  • Tell me another story, Mr. Lincoln

I wonder what Abe Lincoln would think about all the fuss with Steven Spielberg’s epic movie “Lincoln.”

I can hear a reporter asking the ghost of Mr. Lincoln, “Did you ever think your popularity would soar even beyond its already lofty heights? And, how does this development affect your assessment of your own place in history?”

  • The Caring Place Christmas list

Last year, one of our staff members at The Caring Place asked a 7-year-old boy what he wanted for Christmas. He said, “I already have it. A safe place to stay.”

A young mother wondered if she had done the right thing in leaving her abuser so close to the holidays. When asked why she said she didn’t know how she was going to buy her two children what was on their Christmas list for Santa.

  • Solving the special taxing district issue

It’s important to understand a question before formulating an answer.

State Auditor Adam Edelen made several questions very clear last week about Kentucky’s special taxing districts after his office spent six months developing a report on what it calls ghost governments.

Among them: What is a special taxing district? How many exist in Kentucky? Who oversees them?

How does the public get information about how they spend public money?

What’s the process for dissolving a district?

  • Giving thanks

Children really do say the darndest things, don't they?

Second-graders at Campbellsville and Taylor County elementary schools had some pretty good answers when I asked them what they are thankful for. Read their answers on today's front page.

After meeting with the students on Friday, I began to think about what I am thankful for this year.

First, I am thankful for the 20 children I interviewed last week. They are the future of Taylor County. Judging by the answers I got to my questions, the future is bright in our county.

  • Thanksgiving a time to help those in need

As we celebrate a season of thankfulness this week, many will gather around a table with family and friends to enjoy a meal. As we do this, we should remember that there are others who are not as fortunate.

Thanksgiving is a time to offer special thanks for all we are blessed with throughout the year, but it should also be a time when we think of those who are not blessed with a hot meal or may not have a roof over their heads.

  • Goodbye, Room

"I went back upstairs one more time and said 'goodbye' to my room. I'm ready to go now."

Dave's words were my signal: Cutting my eyes toward him as he walked to his car, I turned on the headlights in the early morning dawn, put the U-Haul in gear and we all - Dave, Lori, Madi, and I - headed south, caravan style.

  • Grace-Givers Anonymous

I'm thinking about starting a nonprofit organization for all the people who perform acts of kindness and don't want to be thanked for doing them. Maybe I'll name it "Grace-Givers Anonymous."

  • Commercials show disrespect for soldiers

I don't normally pay a lot of attention to commercials on TV. When they come on, I usually leave the room to do something like make a trip to the fridge. But one collection of commercials airing on national TV recently caught my attention, and I have to say I don't like them.

Navy Federal Credit Union has been advertising its business, which offers financial services such as home and auto loans, checking and savings accounts and more, to members of the military.
