Today's Opinions

  • Resolve to keep resolutions

    Nine days.

That's how long until, according to a British survey by allabouthealth.org.uk, the majority of people give up on their New Year's resolutions.

Last year, my resolution was to wear earrings every day. Things were going well until the sixth day when I discovered half of a pair of earrings I had just gotten for Christmas on the floor - chewed up beyond recognition - and a guilty-looking beagle named Ellie nearby.

  • Can we talk?

I used to work with someone who would on rare occasions step into my office and ask, "Can we talk?"

I immediately knew something was seriously amiss and therefore needed to be addressed in order to avoid potentially disastrous consequences.

  • Can God exist?

In the wake of yet another school shooting, several questions are being asked.

Are current gun laws adequate? Shouldn't clues of the perpetrator's intentions have been noticed by family and friends? Are our schools' security policies adequate?

But some ask, "Does God even exist?"

After all, if God is a righteous and loving God, how could he allow something as heinous as the murder of innocent children?

  • Christmas wishes

This is one of my favorite times of the year.

It’s busy, but people seem happy. They spend time with each other. They decorate. They donate to worthy causes and pitch in to help those in need.

The winter season gets in full swing and even the chance of snow flurries makes me happy.

We laugh more and are more generous. People buy presents for those they love and those who might not get presents.

  • The true story of Christmas

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.

And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.

And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, (because he was of the house and lineage of David,) to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

  • Adanta reminds public that mental health help is available

In the moment and the aftermath of the most horrific tragedy involving innocent children and their teachers last week in Connecticut, my heart is saddened, as I am sure our community members’ hearts are. The Adanta Group Community Mental Health Center offers our deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims and the entire community of Newtown, Conn.

  • Guidelines for responsible pet ownership

Owning a pet is a privilege and should result in a mutually beneficial relationship. Pets are wonderful, loving companions, which can bring much happiness into our lives. However, the benefits of pet ownership come with obligations. A responsible pet owner will:

    • Commit to the relationship for the life of your pet. Make sure you are willing to commit to an adult dog or cat for a minimum of 10 years. Some birds actually outlive their owners.

  • Community papers still going strong

In recent years, there has been a lot of speculation about the future of journalism, specifically, the printed newspaper.

News media sites such as the New York Times and Yahoo! have brought journalism to a new level. Their content is constantly updated and is invaluable for staying informed on the current events and issues affecting our country. This instant access to news has led many to believe that the demise of local community newspapers, like the News-Journal, is inevitable.

The Central Kentucky News-Journal is your source for local news, sports, events, and information in Campbellsville, KY and the surrounding area.
