  • Court traveling a slippery gravel slope

    "I'm warning you," Mom says. "This is the last time!"

    That idle threat is probably heard on a regular basis in every household from here to Timbuktu. But Taylor County magistrates heard something similar recently, and we certainly hope they'll really start to listen soon.

    Last November, magistrates voted to adopt a resolution recommended by the Court's Transportation Committee that the County no longer accept gravel roads into its road system - with the exception of three roads already in the process of being accepted.

  • Simplify: Not as simple as it sounds

    You've heard it before, but as we enter the New Year it's good to remember. Here it is: Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people. Now, of course, I have to ask the question, "Where does most of your discussion fall?"

    My guess is, if you were determined to talk more about ideas, than events, and least and last of all, people, you would probably talk less ... period! Talking about ideas requires thinking, and let's admit it, that isn't easy.

  • 'Nothing endures like change'

    I'll admit that when I learned 11 days ago that the company I'm working for is going to shop itself around to potential new owners, you could have blown me over with a feather.

    Thirty-five years (3 1/2 less than I've been with my wife) will solidify a feel-good relationship. Times do change.

    I've been asked what's going to happen by fellow employees and the public alike. I wish I had THE answer they're looking for, because uncertainty breeds wild thoughts - most of them a waste of productive concentration.

  • Great leaders believe in more than thermselves

    I really enjoyed Rebecca Cassell's piece titled "Why Not Dream Big."

    Leaders are definitely something that this country is in need of.

    I don't know if the people who live through the times that are guided by great leaders know what they have. If I was alive during the time of Martin Luther King Jr., I think I could have recognized what a great man he was.

    I think we only judge leaders by their accomplishments after they are gone, or at least retired from their leadership position.

    I would like to ask members of the City Council for a few minutes of their time to explain my views on the proposed smoking ban in Campbellsville.

  • Newest safety net is promising

    Thanks to technology, our families will soon be safer.

    A new "One Call Now" program, already in use at some local schools, will notify us by telephone in the event of an emergency in Taylor County.

    The one-call system can send a pre-recorded message to as many as 5,000 phone numbers in a minute's time. In less than 10 minutes, all of Taylor County could be warned of an approaching storm.

  • Mother's worst nightmare comes true

    Victims of domestic violence go to great lengths to protect their children. They do not want their children to be hurt and will voluntarily take a beating in order to keep their children from being hit.

    A mother's worst nightmare is to have her children become a victim of the violence.
