  • Volunteers are crucial to a community

    On a recent trip to Raleigh, N.C., I saw a statue dedicated to the Good Samaritan. Of course it called to mind the parable in the Bible about the Samaritan who graciously cared for the wounded beggar on the side of the road.

    But it also reminded me of all the folks today who give of themselves to make a difference and strengthen their communities. Our volunteers.

  • State needs to give shoppers a sales tax break

    When it comes to taxes, almost everyone would say they pay plenty on everything these days.

    And when it comes to sending a child to school, there’s no doubt it can be an expensive process with all of the necessities on that back-to-school list.

    To help ease the pain of parents as they send children back to school, Kentucky needs to join a growing list of states that offer a tax-free shopping week or weekend in preparation for the start of a new school year.

  • Resident is proud of Main Street

    I just want to thank whoever made Main Street so pretty. It looks alive again.

    The beautiful urns and flowers changed the look so much. So glad Happy Days is in the old Corner Drug building where I spent a lot of happy hours in younger years.

  • TCHS fishing team thanks supporters

    The Taylor County High School Fishing Team had its opening tournament of the season on June 16 at Green River Lake.

    The team would like to thank the following people for volunteering their time to serve as boat captains: John Benningfield, Larry Cox, Jeremiah Davis, Scott Osbourn, John Sharpe, Chad White and Todd White.

    When I was a young boy, my father would drive around the block three or four times downtown to find a parking space. There wasn’t a vacant store in downtown at that time. After shopping centers and strip malls became popular, our downtown stores began to move to those areas. But recent efforts to revitalize downtown have reversed that trend.

  • Payroll taxes good for employee raises

    I was glad to hear that city and county employees will receive their raises next year. If they hadn’t, I would have been curious as to why not, as I am paying not one, but two payroll taxes, to the city and county. I would have wondered where all the money was going.

    I have not had a raise in three years, and I have friends who haven’t (had one) in four or more. It’s a tough economy, you know, and I certainly appreciate the city and county employees who serve us so well. So all those who are blessed to get pay raises should be thankful.

  • Campbellsville needs its residents to be leaders, dreamers

    Campbellsville is a good city that is quickly on its way to becoming great. Main Street is being resurrected right before our eyes. Every time a broken thing gets mended, every time a brick gets put back into place, every light that gets turned back on brings a new level of hope, and hope is the spark that ignites fires.

    In the past couple of years, a great deal of momentum has been achieved but we are nowhere near critical mass.
