  • Budget woes

    During the first 10 days in office, I have discovered that Kentucky's financial house is in serious disarray. In fact, we have inherited a budget situation easily described as beyond serious.

    As reported this week, the Consensus Forecasting Group issued what I interpret as dire warnings about the state's grim revenue estimates.

    For example, their numbers indicate a $120 million shortage in collections during the remainder of this fiscal year. I'm speaking of money already obligated. Other formerly made commitments will add to the size of the current fiscal year shortfall.

  • Perry Thomas is a great hire

    It was with great joy that my family and I read of the news that Coach Perry Thomas is returning to Campbellsville as the new head football coach at Campbellsville University.

    Over 10 years ago, my son, John, played football under Coach Thomas. John tore his ACL badly at football camp the summer before his junior year. He was not able to play football that fall, but the lessons he learned from his extremely dedicated football coach, Coach Thomas, as he rehabilitated, have never been forgotten.

  • School days

    After serving Thanksgiving leftovers for the third time, the remainder, which was a lot of good food, went down the garbage disposal. When we do that, I always think about the hungry and needy in the world who would be delighted to have that.

    I'm reminded of another time when I was in school of a caring and sweet lady who was in charge of the school lunchroom. At least three times a week, she would cook up a batch of homemade rolls.

  • Need real people in office

    I totally agree with Paul Harmon, Terry Keltner, Doug Mullins, David Ellis, Ricky Cox, Betty Amos, Miranda Nunn, Henry Berry and many others about the proposed Campbellsville City Council smoking ban. We need people like this in City Hall who can see the real world.

    I have known for several months that a few City Council members and a few do-good, know-it-all City employees were out to get Mayor Brenda Allen, but I didn't think I would live to see the day that she would side with these clowns against her friends and the people who elected her.

  • End-of-the-Year review points to progress, accomplishments

    The holiday season provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the many good things that are happening at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and to share this good news with residents throughout the region the college serves.

    ECTC President/CEO Dr. Thelma J. White reminds us from time to time that good things happen by choice, not by chance. We agree. As members of the college's Board of Directors, we are pleased to recognize White's leadership and the good work that has been accomplished this year by the college's faculty and staff.

    My name is Paul Harmon. I'm currently a member of the Campbellsville City Council, and I am vigorously against imposing any smoking ban on private businesses. I'm against it because it isn't fair.

  • We need all Mr. Basketballs in the KHSAA Hall of Fame

    I would like for everyone that reads this - and especially the basketball fan - to help us get every Kentucky Mr. Basketball inducted into the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

    The KHSAA Hall of Fame was started in 1988 and only 14 of the 53 former Mr. Basketball(s) have been inducted. There are currently 28 who are eligible and deserve to be inducted.

  • Who's getting rich in this war

    The war has become "big business" and a few private contractors end up with most of the money approved by Congress.

    What is even more disgusting is that Blackwater mercenaries are one of the biggest recipients of this money. Is this supporting our troops? Is there anyone left in Washington who really represents the American people?

  • We need to be worrying about more than smoking

    This letter is in response to Betty Amos' letter to the editor discussing the smoking ban. I must first say that I am in absolute agreement with her and I appreciate her opinion and concern.

    It seems to me that this town could use a few more persons with the same views as Amos. I'm sure Amos deals with a lot of children and adolescents with drug abuse problems or other issues. I've heard of her and her work, and I commend her for the progress she has made for many people in this community.

  • A potpourri of opinion

    The last two letters from Amy Williams and Betty Amos really hit the nail on the head.

    Our lovely little town has a terrible administration. One got her job with a flip of the coin. Besides that, [Judge/Executive] Eddie Rogers is following the path of [former judge/executive] Paul Patton.

    I am a Democrat and so is Rogers. I am really disappointed in him.

    Now they have us in a debt, our children and their children with a dog walk, skateboard park and a jail. Millions of dollars. And now no smoking.
