  • Tax returns aren't right

    Well, here I am yet again having to discuss something else in adding to a subtraction - an additional situation subtracting the amount of income I make each year. This time it has to do with income tax returns and W2 forms.

    Is it just me, or are W2 forms looking somewhat ..."not right"? I've heard a number of people comment about how their W2 forms didn't look quite right, as if it didn't actually state what they should have paid in for the past year for as much as they worked. Does anybody else out there kind of get that impression?

    As we head into 2008, voters are becoming more aware each day of the upcoming election contests happening at all levels of government, from your local officials to the President of the United States.

  • Gambling always expands; problem gamblers need help now

    Gambling activity will continue to increase in Kentucky. This predicable increase is not part of any proposal to expand forms of currently legal gambling in the commonwealth. It is due to the nature of business. Because gambling will continue its inexorable growth, it is time - now - for Kentucky to address existing problem gambling issues.

    The business operation of gambling in America is reflective of the nation's capitalist economy. This is instructive, not surprising. For any business to succeed, anywhere, it must align with the society in which it competes.

  • Show we care, ban smoking

    Campbellsville has a great opportunity with the smoke-free restaurant ordinance. We have the chance to level the playing field for our hospitality employees.

    By making all restaurants 100 percent smoke-free, we can offer both our restaurant workers and patrons the same clean air found in many of Campbellsville office buildings. In order to do this, we must recognize that enclosed smoking rooms with separate ventilation do not work.

  • Gun-free zones

    Has anyone stopped to consider how stupid it is for a college, a mall, a church or any other place to hang a sign up declaring itself a "gun-free" zone? Is this not like an invitation to every deranged psycho with a chip on his shoulder and a taste for publicity and their "15 minutes of fame" to go in and shoot up a bunch of defenseless people?

    People who would otherwise not be defenseless, at least not in states that allow citizens the right to carry concealed, as I am proud to say Kentucky is one of.

  • Be aware of school shootings

    How many shootings are we going to have in this country - from post offices and factories to whole families? The really horrible ones were in schools in Illinois and Virginia.

    I really think all schools should have armed guards, especially universities. We need unannounced searches on lockers and desks at all our schools.

    Employees should watch for anything wrong. This is for protection. They need to look for firearms and dope.

    Campbellsville has a fine university and almost a full attendance. Just be aware.

    Don't wait until it's too late.

  • Get away from abuse

    Happy Valentine's Day!

    I know, you are probably thinking that sounds rather corny. Yes it does and isn't that a wonderful thing? In my opinion, our world could certainly use a little more corn.

    So many troubled souls are in our world. We as human beings play such important roles in others' lives. Most times we don't even know what an impact we may have made on someone. To think that something I may have said to someone in passing made them laugh or brought them a positive feeling is very humbling to me.

  • The political horizon

    Like most everyone with newspaper, news magazine, television or Internet facilities, I've been keeping up with (as best as I can) the latest national and state political developments.

    Sometimes things move too fast for me to absorb and understand them, especially on the national front. It gets confusing when there are two national parties and dozens of candidates competing for the presidential nominations, though events have narrowed the fields considerably and made it somewhat easier to follow.

  • Beshear should stop playing politics with our troops

    The Lexington Herald-Leader and WHAS 11 recently reported about the Beshear Administration's firing of Eric Landis, an Air National Guardsman who had served as a staffer to Gov. Ernie Fletcher. Beshear fired Airman Landis less than a month after he returned from active duty in violation of state and federal law.

    At first, I was reluctant to speak out on behalf of Landis, who is a registered Republican, because I did not want to politicize this issue. I actually felt it was worth giving the Beshear Administration the opportunity to do the right thing.

  • Soldiers not being treated properly

    Here I am having to put in my two cents' worth about another issue of our country. This time, I'm talking about how too many soldiers, one is too many, who upon returning home from war with certain problems, are being told a bunch of lies about those problems so somebody else can save a buck elsewhere.

    There's more evidence that this great nation of ours is heading for a downfall of which the likes we have never seen before. It's not enough our working class people are being done wrong, now those in charge of this land won't even take care of those who fight for us.
