My son is in kindergarten at Taylor County Elementary School. On Tuesday, April 22, his class went outside on school premises to pick up trash for Earth Day. Although it was a good lesson for the kids to take care of the earth, I wish my son would have brought home a permission slip.

I definitely would not have signed it, giving him permission to go into the weeds to pick up trash. He got such a bad case of poison ivy that he ended up in the emergency room. Luckily, we stopped the poison ivy with a shot and medication.

The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem. Our signature fundraising event, Relay For Life, is right around the corner in Taylor County on June 6-7. Relay teams are working hard to reach their personal fundraising goals and are canvassing the community asking for donations and hosting events to raise money for the cause.

My wife draws Social Security disability. This is our only income. I found out April 23 that I was also approved for Social Security. We thought this was a godsend, but then we found out the rest of the story.

I don't see how Tom Fisher got his figures. I am not educated, but I come up with a lot more [money to operate fire substations] than he does.

Each substation has two persons per shift, three shifts per day, seven days a week. That is 168 hours per week per person (two persons) per substation. You pay for 336 hours per substation - $10 per hour - very, very conservative.

Then you have Social Security, Worker's Comp, health insurance, etc.
