  • True ethics reform takes leadership

    While I am encouraged to see Gov. (Steve) Beshear's increased attention to ethics reform, I am disappointed that he did not follow recommendations made in the more comprehensive version of this legislation passed by the Kentucky State Senate. As it relates to my office, the Governor should have followed the Senate's proposal to include the Secretary of State in the rotation of constitutional officers who make recommendations for appointments to the Executive Branch Ethics Commission.

  • Health care is America's most important issue

    The United States has the finest and most advanced health care system in the world, but millions of Americans do not have access to and cannot afford the high cost of health insurance.

    The American people should let every person in Congress know that the Republicans who voted to sustain Bush's veto of the Children Health Care Bill have for the time being abruptly ended the fight for all Americans to have available to them affordable and proper health care, and they should be remembered at election time.

  • County folk locked out of alcohol vote

    Call me crazy, but I thought all Taylor Countians were a part of Campbellsville? I live in the county but when asked where I live I say "Campbellsville." I've lived in Campbellsville all my life. I never did understand why just the "city" people voted for mayor. But I'm glad Brenda Allen is our mayor.

    I never said anything. I let it go. But with this issue about alcohol being served in our restaurants and dining with a meal, I will not sit by and say nothing.

  • Reverse the Medicare cuts

    I urge you to do all you can to assure Congress reverses the mandated 10.6 percent cut in Medicare payments to doctors scheduled for July 2008. Action is needed by mid-June or Medicare will begin processing payment cuts.

    The cuts in payments to doctors will devastate seniors' and all military beneficiaries' access to health care by encouraging even more doctors to stop seeing Medicare and military TriCare patients. Military beneficiaries are affected even more severely because TriCare rates are capped at Medicare levels, and in many cases are discounted below Medicare's.

  • Practice what you pray

    Gov. Steve Beshear proclaimed May 1 as "Day of Prayer in Kentucky."

    Thank you, Governor. If I may, here is a prayer for the most innocent among us:

    "Jesus, I plead your blood over my sins and the sins of my nation. God end abortion and send revival to America."

    It's a simple prayer and easy to commit to memory. More information about this prayer can be found at www.bound4life.com. Biomedical discoveries continue to help us understand that, from conception, the life inside a mother's womb is an individual life, separate yet dependent upon his or her mom.

    On Tuesday, May 20, citizens living in the city of Campbellsville will have the opportunity to go into the voting booth and express their wishes relating to whether or not restaurants in Campbellsville that qualify should be able to serve liquor by the drink.

  • Do we really want alcohol?

    I am not a writer but feel that I need to state my views on the upcoming alcohol question. I heard on television that a number of our children by the age of 12 are alcoholics and on drugs.

    Do we really want to bring more sin and corruption to our communities? Alcohol has destroyed individuals and families.

    I urge you to please vote no on the alcohol question on our ballot. If you plan to vote yes or not vote at all, please reconsider and vote against this alcohol bill.

  • Schools need our help

    Regarding "City Schools eliminate associate principal positions" ... I was disheartened to read the article, short and sweet as it was. The cost of fuel is affecting the entire country, but our schools?

    It is about time that the fuel companies take a smaller profit or give back to the communities. The very least they can do is donate money to schools and hospitals.

  • Alcohol sales just not needed

    Once again, residents of Taylor County are faced with the question of whether or not we want to allow the sale of alcohol in our community. This time, however, only city residents are able to decide the issue.

    For some reason, our state lawmakers have failed to look beyond the end of their noses and see that alcohol affects entire county populations, not just those in the city limits. County residents also work at and support businesses in the city and are affected by what happens within the city limits. The city-county relationship is not either-or, rather, it is both-and.
