  • What American is all about

This is what America is all about, the first African American to reach the highest office in our country, the United States Presidency. From the back of a bus to the forefront of the White House, a black president in office is a victory for all of us Americans, no matter what color we are.

  • November is National Adoption Month

Dave Thomas, Lee Majors, former President Bill Clinton and Halle Berry. What do these famous people have in common? They were all adopted by someone who cared.

November is National Adoption Awareness Month, and Gov. Steve Beshear has concurred, it is Adoption Awareness Month in Kentucky.

  • Problems at the polls

Thank you for printing the sample ballot in the paper, because if you had not, I would not have voted on the correct one.

The poll workers, the same ones who have been there year after year, did not hand me the correct ballot. In fact, they did not know whether to give many of the people a city or a county ballot. They were passing the people on to vote before they had checked the book. They were guessing.

  • Taylor County Clerk's response

Taylor County Clerk Mark Carney had this response:

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and tell us about the concerns you had on Election Day. I am glad to hear how the ballot being printed in the paper is used by voters in preparation for the Election. The County spends lots of money every election to advertise the ballot in the newspaper. The cost of the advertisement depends upon the size of ballot. The cost to run the ballot in the paper this year was $589.68, but it is money well spent when voters take the time to review it.

  • While we slept, Congress looted our Social Security

High Social Security payroll taxes have contributed to yearly Social Security Trust Fund surpluses until the proclaimed surplus is now in excess of $2,140 billion ($2.14 trillion).

However, Congress has elected to sacrifice Social Security on the alter of corruption by spending the entire surplus, requiring the U.S. Treasury to cover the embezzlement by issuing non-negotiable IOU bonds to the Trust Fund. Such irresponsible and reprehensible behavior should alert voters that no member of Congress has the integrity to be our president.

  • Lack of marching band hurts students

Needless to say, after having read Calen McKinney's column in which it stated the Campbellsville High School band program has declined tremendously, as well as not having a marching band this year, it greatly affected me. It was at that moment that I began to reflect of my years in the band.

  • Juvenile arthritis a serious crisis

When Senators Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning return to Washington, D.C. after the November election for a "lame duck" session, they will have a final opportunity to complete work and pass the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act (H.R. 1283).

  • Disappointed in alcohol decision

My name is Mae Kearney and I have lived in Taylor County most of my life. I lived in Green County briefly when I was a small child. I was totally disappointed in our county, when I saw the headlines of our local paper on Monday, Oct. 20 making a big deal of the first drink of alcohol legally served in Campbellsville in 71 years.

Recently, there was a big issue about smoking in restaurants. So now you cannot smoke in restaurants, but you can drink alcohol. Isn't this trading one evil for another?

  • Things won't change just because it's legal

If anyone assumes since it is now legal to sell alcoholic drinks with a meal at licensed restaurants in Campbellsville that it will stop the trips to "wet" counties for the usual drinking and buying of six packs, whiskey and wine, I have to say, "You live in a dream world."

  • Actually think before choosing

For those who listen to mainstream media such as NBC, CBS and ABC, you do not get the truth. They make up the news instead of reporting it. The truth of Obama's policies is to remove any reference to God, to support and provide to abort/kill babies. He also voted if a baby lives through a botched abortion to kill them as well. He will and does provide for and support the homosexual lifestyle. He says they should receive special treatment and funds the same as a man/woman in marriage.
