  • The battle of the century

    I hear that Congress may very well renew and extend our current federal tax rates after a two-year debate and cliff-hanging finish, just a few days before they would revert to higher rates, come the new year.

    Most of our businesses and commercial industries will be pleased with this outcome, since economists predict it will serve to help our nation recover from the recession that has plagued us for so many months.

  • Lights are a Christmas blessing

    I would just like to say thank you to all of the city/county employees and businesses who have helped to make the Christmas light display in Miller Park a success.

    What a blessing it is each morning as I take my children to school and daycare to get to experience the glorious lights that the Lord has given us to enjoy this year. These lights put a smile on each of my family members daily and I always get a little good morning giggle or "wow" from my precious children out of the lights. What a wonderful way my Jesus has given to me to start each and every morning.

  • A Thanksgiving 'thank you'

    Thank you to Bethel First Presbyterian Church for a very special Thanksgiving meal, your 18th time to provide for many people in your community who were hungry for food and/or fellowship.

    This event first began when a majority of the church's 115 members cook for and served about 50 people in 1993.

    Since then, the crowds have steadily increased each year as single adults, couples and families have lined up to be served in the fellowship hall by many church and community volunteers.

  • Santa's Helpers say thanks

    We would like to say thank you to the Kiwanis Club for choosing us for the Santa's Helper award this year. We very much appreciate the plaque give to us, especially since both names were so kindly placed on the plaque. We will treasure it.

    We would also like to say thank you to Calen McKinney for the wonderful piece she wrote in the Thursday, Nov. 25 edition of the News-Journal. We also want to thank all those who filled and brought Christmas shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child.

  • Take care of your pets in winter

    Winter, with its bitter wind, rain and snow, is rapidly approaching. Now is the time to check our doghouses, patching and repairing all cracks and leaks. It is also time for new, clean bedding. Whether it be straw, blankets or carpeting, this bedding will need to be replaced often. Putting a board along the bottom of the door opening will help keep the bedding inside the house. Also, turning the door away from the wind helps protect your dog from the cold.

  • Epilepsy awareness month

    More than 3 million Americans have epilepsy or a seizure disorder. November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month and I am one of thousands of volunteers working to raise awareness of this terrible condition.

    Epilepsy is common, but many people know little about it or what to do when someone is having a seizure. That's why the Epilepsy Foundation is asking everyone to take the Get Seizure Smart! quiz in November.

    My daughter-in-law gave me a diary for a birthday gift and asked me to write some of my life's lessons in it for my grandchildren. Every once in a while, life gives you a very special moment, so overwhelming you almost glow. I had just experienced one. These are a few do's - don'ts that come to mind ...
    Say thank you a lot.
    Plant a garden every spring.
    Live beneath your means.
    Be forgiving of others.
    Be a student in some kind of class.
    Make new friends, but cherish the old ones.

  • LETTER: Veteran offers thanks

    As a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, I am writing to thank all of those who helped provide excellent programs to honor veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Campbellsville Middle School and on Thursday, Nov. 11 at Taylor County High School and at the Taylor County Courthouse. On Tuesday, Nov. 16, we veterans were again honored at Campbellsville High School.
    All participants did an excellent job, especially the CMS Eagle Choir whose members sang beautifully from memory all of the military hymns on Tuesday at CMS and on Thursday at the courthouse square.

  • Spiritual confusion

    Recently, the Courier-Journal reported that Dr. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, wrote at length to instruct Christians not to do yoga.
    He says, "The embrace of yoga is a symptom of our postmodern spiritual confusion, and, to our shame, this confusion reaches into the church."

  • Kids Outdoor Day thanks

    On behalf of all of the volunteers, participants and sponsors, I would like to extend a huge thank you to all who made this year's event possible. Once again we had a wonderful day outside in the great outdoors enjoying the beautiful resources that God has given us.
