  • Flu vaccine still available

    Kentucky Department for Public Health officials are reminding Kentuckians that it's not too late to get vaccinated against the flu, especially during this holiday season.

    "Now is a good time to protect yourself and your family by putting a flu shot on your holiday list," stated William Hacker, M.D., commissioner of DPH and acting undersecretary for health at the Cabinet for Health and Family Services.

  • Officials form parkway foundation

    Construction of the Heartland Parkway is still years away, which is why community leaders in several counties have teamed together to ensure the project becomes reality.

    "Because we know that this project will take a number of years to accomplish, we have set up The Heartland Parkway Foundation Inc., which is a regional nonprofit group dedicated to helping educate the public and decision makers on the importance of the project," said John Chowning, who is chair of the foundation.

  • New equipment won't thwart sign thieves

    It's a shame it's even necessary, but a recent purchase by the County makes good financial sense.

    Taylor Fiscal Court recently bought a $7,435 machine that will let County employees make road signs themselves rather than having to order them to help cut the cost.

    Last year alone, the County spent $8,900 on signs. With the new machine, hopefully that cost will decrease to the cost of supplies.

  • Curves helps residents say goodbye to holiday weight gain

    With the holidays now here, visions of cookies, cakes and sugarplums bring great cheer. However, you might not be so excited when you realize it will take one and a half hours climbing stairs, three and a half hours cleaning the house, or two and a half hours riding your bike to burn off one 6-ounce slice of cheesecake.

  • Nominations sought for 2008 Kentucky history awards

    The Kentucky Historical Society and the Historical Confederation of Kentucky are seeking nominations for the 2008 Kentucky History Awards.

    The awards acknowledge outstanding achievements in the field of history by individuals, civic leaders, communities, museums and historical organizations.

    The awards celebrate outstanding programs, exhibits, Web sites and publications, as well as individuals who have excelled in the field or made lifetime contributions to the preservation, awareness and appreciation of Kentucky's history.

  • Tobacco growers seek more input on 2008 contract.

    Joe Spalding of Marion County and Bernie Cave of Taylor County knew local tobacco farmers were not happy with Philip Morris' 2008 contract proposal.

    So, they called a meeting, and about 100 farmers from Adair, Anderson, Casey, Green, Marion, Nelson, Scott, Shelby, Taylor and Washington counties gathered Wednesday, Dec. 12 in the Floral Hall at the Marion County Fairgrounds.

    "My main objective is to have a voice with the respective companies we deal with," Spalding said.

    He encouraged everyone at the meeting to speak up.

    A grand opening and ribbon cutting was recently hosted at Campbellsville Professional Accounting Services, 107 Central Plaza. Pictured above are founder Robert Rogers and his granddaughter Lindsey Burgess. Burgess has a bachelor's degree in accounting and is qualified in QuickBooks Pro Advisor, is an Advanced Agriculture Tax Specialist and has a master's in accounting and financial management.   • Southern States releases year-end financial report

    Board and management leaders from Southern States, Campbellsville Service, heard reports of the company's fiscal year financial results at a conference in late November in Bardstown.

    Jeremy Sollberger, management representative; and Scott Sprowles, board representative; learned that Southern States:

    - Had the best year in a decade and one of the best operating performances in its history.

    - Had sales in fiscal year 2007 of $1.7 billion, a $100 million increase from 2006.
