  • Annual MLK celebration set for Jan. 20

    The annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, hosted by the Ecumenical Ministerial Alliance of Campbellsville, will be Sunday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.

    The celebration will be at the Ransdell Chapel on the Campbellsville University campus.

    Before the celebration, the annual march will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Campbellsville Middle School. The march will end at the Ransdell Chapel.

    The guest preacher for the worship service will be the Rev. Jacqueline King. She is the pastor of Stoner Memorial AME Zion Church in Louisville.

  • 2007 Sports year in review

    The sports year was happy and sad on the local front as coach Donna Wise retired and Ginger Colvin took the reigns.

    Some things also remained about the same as Taylor County High's softball and baseball teams continued to rack up district crowns, Campbellsville's baseball team kept rolling in the All "A" and Campbellsville University men's basketball, baseball and softball stayed in the national championship hunt.

  • Durham named Kentucky Colonel

    Zach Durham was recently named a Kentucky Colonel after his grandfather, David Lyons, contacted the Governor's Office on his behalf. Durham met former Gov. Ernie Fletcher during the governor's visit to Campbellsville in 2006 and had his picture taken with him. He is the 12-year-old son of Dan and Leslie Durham of Campbellsville.

  • Local briefs

    Holiday closings

    Taylor County Sheriff's Department and Taylor County Clerk's Office will be closed today and tomorrow. The Sheriff's department will accept walk-ins to pay property tax bills on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3. Mailed payments must be postmarked by Dec. 31.

    Pasture renovation signups start

    The Kentucky Soil and Water Conservation Commission will resume State Cost Share sign-ups for the period of Jan. 1 to Jan. 25.

    The January cost share applications should be submitted to the Conservation District by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25.

  • White celebrates first birthday

    Isaiah Clark White celebrated his first birthday on Nov. 17 at his home with friends and family. He is the son of Brandon and Kim White of Campbellsville.   • Spreading Christmas cheer

    Five hundred. That's the number of children whose Christmas prospects were improved this year because of Toys for Tots and Toys for Kids.

    We are a giving community, but we're also an active community with many active participants. All the giving in the world does not necessarily compute to a good project. But we're blessed to have a couple of great coordinators - Sharon Dobson at the fire departments and Denise Gupton at Rescue.

  • Ominous start to 2008

    As Ross Perot would say (paraphrased): "That giant sucking sound you hear is the $300 million shortfall in Kentucky's finances."

    The sabers are being rattled early, I presume to put legislators on notice prior to the Jan. 8 General Assembly. Sabers make a distinctive clanking noise and are about as irritating as the sound of money being sucked out of the state budget.

    If form holds true, the next six months will be lean ones - with potential spending cuts and a hiring freeze.
