  • Weekend events will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

    Beginning this weekend, several local events will seek to keep the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alive.

    A pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement, King was shot and killed in Memphis, Tenn. on April 4, 1968.

    Five years prior, at a march on Washington, King delivered what is perhaps his most famous speech, in which he said, "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

  • TCHS wins Battle of the Belts

    Taylor County High School was the winner of the 2nd Annual Taylor County Farm Bureau High School Battle of the Belts Challenge Cup. The award was presented at Friday night's cross-town basketball game.

    The challenge began as an effort to encourage teen drivers to wear their seat belts each and every time they get in a car. At the beginning of school one day last week, a survey was conducted at each high school. During the survey, all vehicles arriving at the high schools were observed for seatbelt use.

  • Bentley helps plan All-American Bowl

    Army Reserve Lt. Col. David Eric Bentley of Campbellsville was a member of the U.S. Army support staff who helped coordinate and plan the recent All-American Bowl high school all-star football game played at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas on Jan. 5.

    The nationally-televised bowl game was sponsored by the U.S. Army and pitted the top high school football athletes in the nation against each other in an East vs. West contest. This was the eighth year that the Army has sponsored the game. In this year's match-up, the East team managed to outscore the West team, 33-23.

  • Lady Tigers fall in OT at IU-South Bend

    Abbey Freeman nailed two treys in overtime to propel Indiana University South Bend to an 83-79 victory over Campbellsville University on Saturday afternoon.

    IU South Bend led by as many as 22 points before the Lady Tigers went on a furious second-half rally to force the overtime period.

    Freeman finished with 13, while Jen VanderZanden scored 20 points, to lead the Titans (11-6). Evva Comans contributed a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Cortney Flanigan was 12 for 16 from the line, scoring 18 points. Niki McDonald dropped in 11.

  • Congratulations, Megan, for a job well done

    Campbellsville and Taylor County were once again well represented at this past weekend's Kentucky Junior Miss program.

    Megan Romines made a Top 15 showing. Taylor County's junior misses always do well at the state program and this year was no exception.

    Megan, you should be proud of your accomplishments. We are. We congratulate you on your success and wish for you only more in the future.

    International Gospel Lighthouse Church is hosting special Wednesday night services this month.

  • Smiling all the way

    Taylor County's 2008 Junior Miss Megan Romines returned home Sunday after a week of preparation and participation in the state Junior Miss Program in Lexington.

    Romines, competing against 36 other high school senior girls from across the state, earned a Top 15 designation.

    "It was definitely one of the most stressful but rewarding experiences of my life," Romines said.

    On Monday, she said she was happy to be home.

    "I never thought I'd say this, but I really missed calculus and the yearbook staff."

  • Primary Election deadline nears

    The deadline for candidates to file to run in the May Primary is Tuesday, Jan. 29.

    The Primary Election is Tuesday, May 20. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Locally, voters could see City Council and State Representative races on the Primary ballot.

    City Council candidates will need to file their papers at the Taylor County Clerk's office by 4:30 on Jan. 29.

  • Taking charge

    It took only a few days for her hair to fall out. But that didn't falter her positive attitude.

    "I'm very blessed and grateful," she says.

    Campbellsville resident Annette Thompson, 42, said she has always had regular mammograms. With fibrocystic breast disease, she said, she knew it was only a matter of time before she had a "bad" mammogram.

    Thompson said the doctor who had performed her last mammogram told her to contact her family doctor. At that point, Thompson said, she became scared her mammogram wasn't normal.

    "In June 2007, it was a bad one," she said.
