  • Former Campbellsville woman is Indiana lawmaker

    A few hours before members of the Indiana General Assembly convened for Organization Day, House Democrats welcomed State Rep. Sandra Blanton (D-Orleans) as Indiana's newest lawmaker.

    Blanton, 58, formerly of Campbellsville, will serve as a replacement for State Rep. Jerry Denbo (D-French Lick), who announced his retirement in November.

    According to a news release from the Indiana House Democratic Caucus, Denbo had represented House District 62 - which includes all of Orange County and parts of Greene, Lawrence, Martin and Washington counties - since 1990.

  • MLK celebration is Sunday

    The Ecumenical Ministerial Alliance of Campbellsville will host the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 20, beginning at 6 p.m.

    The site for the celebration will be the Ransdell Chapel on the campus of Campbellsville University. The annual march will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Campbellsville Middle School and end at the Ransdell Chapel.

    The Rev. Jacqueline King will be the guest preacher. King is the pastor of Stoner Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Louisville.

  • Pregnancy center announces new office hours

    The Central Kentucky Crisis Pregnancy Center has new office hours. The center, located at 319 E. Maple St., offers confidential services and free pregnancy testing.

    Hours for the center are Monday through Thursday from noon to 5 p.m.

    Co-directors are Tracie Perry and Angie Pace.

    The Central Kentucky Crisis Pregnancy Center seeks to help young women in crisis situations. The Center is a pro-life organization and encourages young women to consider alternatives to abortion.

  • CU Tigers notch 15th, 16th triumphs

    Campbellsville University placed six players in double figures and cruised past IU-East 111-72 on Saturday afternoon in the Powell Athletic Center.

    Starters Nestor Colmenares (17) and Bubba Long (16) led the scoring onslaught playing 22 and 17 minutes, respectively, while Hristo Petkov (13), Troy Harris (12), Deveon Jenkins (11) and Clint Graham (10) put up their totals in 64 combined minutes.

    The Tigers (16-3) also downed Brescia on the road Tuesday night and will host OSU-Mansfield this Saturday at 7:30.

  • The Bluegrass Pioneers perform at Lebanon

    The Bluegrass Pioneers finished second in the 2008 Kentucky Bluegrass Music Kickoff in Lebanon on Jan. 4-5. They received $250. Members are: Trent Roy (banjo), Jeff Roy (mandolin) and Kenneth Roy (guitar), all of Casey County, Daniel Wilson (guitar) of Russell Springs and Lynn Benningfield (bass) of Campbellsville.

  • Public business is your business

    In January each year, the News-Journal's editorial staff sends out more than a dozen identical letters, each to a different governing body.

    Sounds exciting, doesn't it?

    Well, it might not be exciting, but it's a very important part of our job.

    The letters are requests for notification of meetings, agendas and copies of information that our public officials discuss or review at their meetings.

    In the past, some public officials have questioned whether they must provide information to the media.

  • The (pant) seat of mercy

    Back when I wore a size 14 petite, I had a pair of black pants that were mislabeled as a size 12 petite.

    I called them my mercy pants, although I'm not sure why. At the time I figured that when you're 5-feet, 1-inch tall and wear a size 14 petite you need all the mercy you can get.

    But that's just silly.

    What's not silly is the concept of mercy. I think of all God's attributes, I love his mercy best. At least that's what I plead for most often. "God, be merciful to me, the sinner."

  • Grand jury charges man with burglary

    A Campbellsville man has been indicted on burglary, assault and other charges.

    Charles Robert Wagoner, 34, of 945 Old Spurlington Road was indicted last Tuesday by a Taylor County grand jury.

    Wagoner was charged with second-degree burglary, assault of a family member, his third offense, first-degree fleeing or evading police, possession of less than 8 ounces of marijuana, first-degree possession of cocaine, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and being a first-degree persistent felony offender.
