  • CES gives math awards

    Taylor County Elementary School has named its Writers of the Week for Jan. 16. They are: Serena Ward, kindergarten; Chloe Moss, first grade; Lexi Raikes, second grade; Raven Shelton, third grade; Barbara Morgan, fourth grade; and Briana Hicks, fifth grade.

  • Bullying bill has a lot of holes in it

    A 13-year-old gets fouled on the basketball court by another student. In turn, later that evening, he sends a Myspace message to that student, saying, "You'd better watch out. I'll get you next time."

    Is that 13-year-old being a bully?

    One person might say yes, another might disagree. But who's right? And what, if anything, should be done about it?

  • Rash earns first place for Lincoln speech

    SaVannah Rash, Taylor County Middle School sixth grader, won first place in the Abraham Lincoln Speech Contest on Saturday.

    Rash will receive reserved seating at the Bicentennial Celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 12. Featured invited guests include President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, Gov. Steven L. Beshear, Pulitzer-Prize-winner Doris Kearns Goodwin, and actor Sam Waterston from Law & Order.

    Music will be provided by the Saxton Cornet Band and the American Spiritual Ensemble.

  • Traffik Stop changes to Lil T's Traffik Stop

    Gary Porter and his daughter, Candace, are the new owners of the former Traffik Stop. The name will be changed to Lil T's Traffik Stop in memory of Candace's son, Thomas Porter.

    At the end of every year, a percentage of the profits will be donated to a special needs foundation. Lil T's will be a convenient store and dine-in restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and homemade cooking. You may dine in or take out. The gas pumps will be full, so stop by to fuel up. Opening day will be Monday, Feb. 4.

  • Tuesday storm causes no problems

    Taylor County's second severe weather threat in as many weeks left behind no reported damage.

    According to Ronnie Dooley, Taylor County Emergency Management public information coordinator, the storm that rolled through the area Tuesday night and Wednesday morning was mild compared to last week.

    "We didn't have any damage reported to us," he said. "We had nowhere near as many calls as last week."

    Dooley said Campbellsville/Taylor County E-911 received about 50 calls during the storm.

  • Area seniors get income tax help

    Beginning Feb. 5, senior citizens in Green, Taylor and surrounding counties can get free income tax service.

    The American Association of Retired Persons is offering its tax-aide program again this year. Electronic filing will be available free of charge. The free service will be offered from Feb. 5 through April 15 at the Green County Senior Citizens Center. The center is located at 112 S. First St. in Greensburg. The service is offered from 3 to 7 p.m. EST.

    Other times are available by appointment by calling local coordinator Brenda Cook at (270) 932-7459.

  • CU to host annual Valentine pageant tomorrow

    Campbellsville University will host its annual Valentine pageant tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. in The Gheens Recital Hall of Gosser Fine Arts Center.

    Nine students will be representing CU, their organization and the ONE campaign, a nationwide organization that seeks to help eliminate poverty, as they vie for the title of 2008 CU Valentine queen.

    The pageant is sponsored by the Student Government Association, and the SGA asks that individuals show their support through attendance and by bringing a non-perishable canned good for the ONE campaign.
