  • Reflecting on a century of living

    She can't understand why everyone's making such a fuss, but Frances Moss is celebrating a milestone nonetheless.

    On Saturday, Moss will be 100 years old.

    "I really don't think it's any big deal," she said.

    Born in Campbellsville to Thomas and Fannie Newton, Moss spent most of her adult life in Louisville and returned to Campbellsville just a couple years ago.

    Moss said she's been lucky to have had good health most of her life, "... until I got about 90 and then I started falling apart."

  • North Hardin clobbers CHS 83-39

    North Hardin pulled away from Campbellsville in the second quarter and shellacked the Eagles in the second half on its way to a 83-39 rout on Tuesday night.

    The Trojans (20-6) tallied 44 second-half points while the Eagles managed only 15.

    Five players, including substitute Cameron Irvin, scored in double figures for North Hardin while sophomores Thomas Downs had nine and Johnathan Olaniyan seven for Campbellsville (8-15).

    The Eagles entertain Washington County on Saturday in the nightcap of a girl-boy twinbill.

  • Dengel joins Visions Hair Salon

    Jessica Dengel has joined the staff at Visions Hair Salon, 5534 Old Lebanon Road.

    She is a licensed cosmetologist and will be available Tuesday through Friday and Saturday by appointment.

    Dengel offers a variety of hair care services along with spa treatment including manicures, pedicures, facials and body wrapping.

  • CU Tigers win second MSC game of week

    Campbellsville University moved up the Mid-South Conference ladder with its second win of the week, a 72-66 home triumph over West Virginia Tech on Saturday.

    The Tigers (19-6) raced out to a 36-25 halftime lead and never let the visitors gain a second-half lead.

    Nestor Colmenares, who garnered MSC Player of the Week honors, had 19 points, 10 rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots to pace coach Keith Adkins' club. Deveon Jenkins added 18 for CU, which moved into a fourth-place tie with Pikeville, only one game behind the Cumberlands and Lindsey Wilson.

  • It's time to unearth Lincoln family legends

    Many of us who have lived in LaRue County all our lives are descended from this region's earliest settlers.

    Our ancestors homesteaded in what was then Hardin County in the early 1800s, during the time the Lincoln family toughed it out at Sinking Spring Farm and Knob Creek. That means plenty of family legends, some with substantiation, have resurfaced with the focus on the Lincoln Bicentennial - the 200th celebration of the birth of our most famous native son, Abraham Lincoln.

  • Library to host "Evening with the Presidents"

    The Taylor County Public Library will host an "Evening with the Presidents" on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

    The event is from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature stories and crafts for children, refreshments and an appearance by a special guest.

    The extended library hours will offer those who attend full library services, including books and magazines, Internet access and audio recordings.

  • Taylor Regional Hospital to offer 'Fun Foods for Kids' class

    Children need proper nutrients to grow strong and healthy, but treats and serving sizes also need to be limited so that children will not develop weight and health problems.

    Taylor Regional Hospital will offer a free class, "Fun Foods for Kids," from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21 at the TRH Learning & Resource Center at 125B Kingswood Drive in Campbellsville.

    The class will be presented by Carrie Phillips, a registered dietitian.

  • Any savings is a good savings when buying drugs

    For some reason, it always seems more difficult to fork over the money for necessities than it does for luxuries. It's much more pleasant to spend money going to the movies than paying the electric bill.

    But the electric bill is a necessity for all of us. And so is medicine.

    A story in Monday's News-Journal gave the details on local pharmacies' generic drug programs, programs that are going to save us all some money.

    Generic drugs, according to the FDA, are exactly the same as brand-name drugs. They just cost less.

  • "ESL in the Community" classes continue

    The Department of English as a Second Language at Campbellsville University will continue its "ESL in the Community" classes.

    Classes will be offered through May on two mornings a week, Mondays and Thursdays, at 9 a.m., in Room 101 of the Ransdell Chapel.

    Classes are free, open to the public and taught by university-trained personnel.

    The department is especially interested in being able to provide this community service on an even broader basis, especially to those in agriculturally related work who may need instruction at a very beginning level.
