  • ACT registration deadline is March 7

    College-hopeful high school students can take the ACT college admission and placement exam on April 12, the next nationwide test date. The registration postmark deadline is March 7.

    The registration fee is $30 for the traditional ACT (without the writing test) and $44.50 for the ACT Plus Writing. The late registration postmark deadline is March 21. An additional $19 fee is required for late registration.

    Students can obtain registration information and materials from their high school guidance counselors' office, or they can register on ACT's Web site at www.actstudent.org.

  • Campbellsville University's Miranda Meeks wins Valentine pageant

    Campbellsville University's Gheens Recital Hall was full of hairspray, bobby pins and curls upon curls recently.

    Miranda Meeks of Princeton competed with eight young women and was crowned the 2008 Valentine Pageant Queen on Feb. 8 at Campbellsville University.

    Meeks also won the interview, poise and talent competitions. She represented Sigma Nu Phi. She performed puppetry as her talent.

    She will represent Campbellsville University in the Mountain Laurel Festival in Pineville in May.

  • CMS takes third in Governor's Cup

    Campbellsville Middle School took third place in the recent District Governor's Cup Competition while Taylor County came in fourth.

    Adair and Green county middle schools also participated. Green County took first, and Adair County was second.

    Following are the students who earned placing, their school and the events in which they competed:

    Mathematics assessment - Brandon Carter, first, GCMS; Murphy Lanham, second, CMS; Alex Lawson, third, TCMS; Kathryn Heineman, fourth, CMS; and Jack Hobbs, fifth, ACMS.

  • Taylor Regional Hospital recognized

    Taylor Regional Hospital recently received recognition for achieving a reliability score of 100 percent on the first quarter 2007 hospital validation from Health Care Excel Hospital Quality Initiative.

    Each quarter hospitals nationwide are required to submit quality data to both the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission. This data is available to the public at www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov.

    Faye Veatch, RN, quality reviewer at TRH, achieved this distinction for the hospital.

  • CES students honored with math medals

    Campbellsville Elementary fourth graders who were recognized for earning a math medal recently are: Priscilla Adams, Corey Marshall, Kendon Young, Jake DeSpain, Macy Gilkeson, Amber Stagner, Brooke Harris, Heather Bailey and Katie Lefever. Math medals are awarded based upon completion of 80 multiplication and division problems within two minutes.

  • Cox-Neal

    Dawn K. Cox and Bryan David Neal, both of Campbellsville, will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, March 15.

    Cox is the daughter of Alice Kay Nicolet and Paul Leroy Trout. Her step-parents are Jonita Trout and David Nicolet.

    She is the owner of Dawn's Childcare in Campbellsville.

    Neal is the son of the late Juanita and the Rev. Kermit Neal.

    He is employed at Ernie's Carpets in Campbellsville.

  • Campbellsville man acknowledges he set fire to a home on purpose

    A Campbellsville man has pleaded guilty to setting fire to a home.

    Robert Kevin Rhodes, 29, of 100 Arbor Lane appeared before Taylor Circuit Court Judge Allan Bertram on Tuesday, Feb. 19.

    Rhodes pleaded guilty to first-degree criminal mischief. He originally faced a charge of second-degree arson.

    According to court records, Rhodes was working for a construction company that was building a new home. Records state Rhodes told police he was fired for no reason and set the home on fire because he was angry with his employer.

  • Students compete in 4-H Talk Meet

    Fifty-four 4-H members presented speeches at the Taylor County 4-H Talk Meet competition on Thursday, Dec. 13 at Taylor County Middle School. Many more participated on a classroom level.

    For the competition, 4-H members were grouped in age divisions. A large number of participants came from the 10- and 11-year-old divisions. Both of these age divisions consisted of more than one room of competition. The top two speeches were selected from each room. These individuals advanced to the finals for selection of the overall winner.

  • World Day of Prayer is March 7

    People in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 7.

    World Day of Prayer is a worldwide ecumenical movement of women and men of many faith traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer on the first Friday in March each year.

    The event will be celebrated locally at St. Mark United Methodist Church, located at 400 Meader St., beginning at 7 p.m.
