  • Adopt-a-Highway Spring Clean Week is March 23-39

    Volunteers will be out in full force next week to spring clean Kentucky's roadsides. The Transportation Cabinet announced recently that the Adopt-a-Highway Spring Clean Week will be March 23-29.

    "The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet appreciates the effort put forth by all Adopt-a-Highway groups in keeping our highways and communities beautiful and litter-free," Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said.

  • Curry to present senior art exhibit at the Hite

    Campbellsville's Karla Curry will be among 10 candidates to complete their bachelor of fine arts at the Hite Art Institute, University of Louisville this spring.

    The students will present an exhibition of their work beginning Tuesday, March 25 in the Hite's Schneider Hall galleries. This exhibition is a culmination of their undergraduate work demonstrating their technical competence, aesthetic abilities and knowledge of professional studio practice.

  • Taylor County releases school calendar for 2008-2009

    Taylor County School District has released its calendar for the 2008-2009 school year.

    Professional development will be from July 28 through July 31 with opening day on Aug. 1.

    First day for students is Monday, Aug. 4.

    Other dates to remember are:

    Sept. 1 - Labor Day

    Oct. 6-17 - Fall break

    Nov. 3 - Kentucky Education Association Day

    Nov. 4 - Election Day

    Nov. 26-28 - Thanksgiving break

    Dec. 22-Jan. 1 - Winter break

    Jan. 19 - Martin Luther King Day

    Feb. 16 - Presidents' Day

    April 6-10 - Spring break

  • Holmes playing Tavistock Cup after Miami

    After competing in the World Golf Championships/CA Championship through Sunday in Miami, John "J.B." Holmes will play in the fifth annual Tavistock Cup at Isleworth Golf and Country Club in Orlando on Monday and Tuesday.

    The Cup showcases the touring golf professional members of Isleworth and Lake Nona, two of the finest golf and country clubs in the world, in a head-to-head team competition.

  • KCS hosts Lincolnfest

    Kentucky Christian School recently celebrated Abraham Lincoln's 200th celebration with "Lincolnfest." They pieced and quilted a quilt for their presentation. All the boys in the school were dressed as President Lincoln and the girls as Mary Todd Lincoln.   • Wherefore art thou?

    I'll admit, it was a little odd to be talking Shakespeare with a class of third-graders. Especially since they knew more than I did.

    I was a guest Monday of Becky Grant's third-grade class at Taylor County Elementary School. I was there to talk with the students about their performance the day before of Shakespeare's infamous tragedy, "Romeo and Juliet." And what a performance it was.

  • Turner builds fire truck from recyclables

    Merick Turner, a first grader at Taylor County Elementary School, accepted the challenge of recycling ordinary items from his teachers, Janet Woodcox and Shelia Roution, and passed with flying colors. He recycled straws, water bottles, bottle lids, yogurt cups, forks and various other items to make a fire truck.
