    Casino gambling, that divisive phrase that has been floating around since Steve Beshear announced his candidacy for governor, is dead.

    The obituary appeared in statewide papers on Friday.

    Not even a landslide Democratic governor could leverage the necessary support out of a Democrat-controlled House to get it to a floor vote.

    I'm disappointed.

  • Former health office sold

    Sztendera Properties is the new owner of the old health department building.

    The company submitted the highest of five bids for the property on East First Street.

    Members of the Taylor County Board of Health opened the bids at their annual meeting on Thursday at the health department's new location on the North Bypass.

    Five bids had been submitted for the property on East First Street and were opened at the meeting. The highest bid was from Roger Sabo on behalf of Sztendera Properties at $289,000. The other four bids were: $190,000, $181,181, $146,000 and $50,000.

  • Woman gets probation in crime ring case

    The last of six people accused of operating a crime ring to sell cocaine together has been sentenced to five years' probation for her crimes.

    Anya Katrina Scott, 30, of 111 Baptist St. in Campbellsville appeared before Taylor Circuit Court Judge Allan Bertram on Tuesday, March 18.

    In December, Scott pleaded guilty to facilitation to commit syndication and second-degree selling cocaine. She originally faced charges of criminal syndication and first-degree selling cocaine.

  • Lady Cardinals perfect in softball opener

    Lauren Cox retired the first 12 batters and Brianne Leach struck out the side in the fourth as Taylor County High School's Lady Cardinals shut out Metcalfe County at home on Monday in Kelly Townsend's first game as head coach.

    The Lady Cards plated single runs in the first and second frames before tallying five in the third and four in the fourth.

    Jennifer England led TCHS by going 3-3 with a triple and a home run. The senior also scored two runs and had 3 RBI.

    Chelsea Nicholas, Becca Cook and Karrie Cave each went 2-3.

  • 4-H Poster Contest open to all currently enrolled 4-H'ers

    Currently enrolled 4-H'ers are invited to participate in a poster contest being sponsored by Taylor County 4-H.

    The subject for the poster contest is "4-H." Posters may take any approach or focus on any area of 4-H. You can show what 4-H is, what you do in 4-H or what 4-H offers young people. Rules for the poster contest are:

    - Poster must be designed on a 14 x 22 poster board (1/2 of a regular poster board).

    - Posters may be designed horizontally or vertically using any medium: watercolor, ink, crayon, oils, pencil or collage.

  • Lady Eagle softballers upend John Hardin

    Campbellsville's Lady Eagles pushed across two runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge John Hardin 7-6 at home on Thursday night.

    The win, the first for first-year head coach Dale Estes, was spearheaded by the three-hit game of Ashley Bates and the two-hit performances of winning pitcher Danielle Morris, Chelsie Gamboa, Ashley Kessinger and Hannah Taylor.

    Morris, who struck out seven and walked none, also had two runs batted in while Bates, Gamboa, Kessinger and Jessica Cox had one RBI apiece.

  • CHS students attend Great Kids Summit

    Campbellsville High School students recently attended the Great Kids Summit in Lexington. Students were involved in various activities that emphasized leadership skills and team building. Stedman Graham was the summit's keynote speaker and Survivor's Kentucky Joe was also a conference presenter. The summit was sponsored by Kentucky Child Now.

  • Holmes does pretty well during his down time

    John "J.B." Holmes had to finish two holes on Monday in the rain-delayed WGC-CA Championship in Miami before flying "home" to Orlando for the Tavistock Cup.

    The two-day tourney, consisting of members from Isleworth and Lake Nona country clubs, gives more than $1 million to charity.

    But, the big winner on Monday and Tuesday was the 25-year-old Holmes (he turns 26 on April 26).

  • DECA recognizes outstanding school stores

    The School-Based Enterprise at Taylor County High School was among the school stores to achieve Gold Level Certification this year and will be recognized at DECA's International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

    Wes Parker, store manager, worked on the certification with the assistance of his advisor, Patty Evans. The school store at Taylor County High School has operated an SBE for 13 years.
