  • What gets your news hackles up?

    Ever since Satan took the form of a snake and tempted Adam and Eve, there has been a mystery associated with reptiles.

    Not since we published a story last week about a man charged with transporting "poisonous" snakes without a permit did we realize how some of what we do so affects our readers.

    Write a story about a child being abused (and this is Child Abuse Awareness Month) and you might never hear a peep. Write a story about someone transporting snakes and you're getting advice all day.

    That's what makes the news business so interesting and frustrating at times.

  • The art of campaign strategy

    We have a computer-generated sign on our conference room door that reads "Innovation Station." But an idea I read about from another newspaper may be THE most innovative idea that I've come across.

    In the April issue of Publishers' Auxiliary, a newspaper trade publication, Jim Pumarlo talks about a Minnesota (Tubby Smith territory) newspaper publisher who generated national headlines when he started charging 5 cents a word for letters to the editor that endorse a candidate.

  • Campbellsville native named KSP special operations trooper of the year

    Trooper First Class Ricky Underwood, a Campbellsville native, was named Trooper of the Year for the special operations section of the Kentucky State Police recently.

    Underwood joined the KSP in July 1989 and was assigned to the Columbia post for several years both as a trooper and a detective. The Columbia post covers several counties including Taylor.

    Underwood is currently assigned to the Kentucky State Police canine section.

  • CU event to raise homelessness awareness

    Do you know how it feels to be homeless? You'll get the chance April 18-19 on Campbellsville University's campus.

    Campbellsville University's Carver School of Social Work will present "Cardboard Nation: A Homeless Experience" beginning Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. and continuing through 7 a.m. Saturday, April 19 on CU's Stapp Lawn.

    "Cardboard Nation's" purpose is to expose the public to the truth about homeless living with all proceeds from the event going to the Green River Ministries Homeless Shelter and Food Pantry.

  • Card track teams begin season with two meets

    High school track began its 2008 season on the local scene with the Pre-Season Rally at Taylor County on March 21.

    The Taylor County boys' squad finished first with 67 points while LaRue County had 54 and Campbellsville 51.

    First-place finishers for Taylor County were Donald White in the 100-meter dash (11.61), Griffin Tucker in the 800-meter run (2:25.89), Wes Colvin in the 3,200-meter run (11:44.96), C.J. Short in the 300-meter hurdles (50.68), Matt Humphress in the triple jump (35-10) and Chris Thomas in the shot put (40-5).

  • Langley-Mattingly

    Myra Langley of Glasgow and Dominitius Mattingly of Nashville, Tenn. will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, April 12.

    Langley is the daughter of Douglas and Jean Allen of Campbellsville.

    She is a 1995 graduate of Lindsey Wilson College and is employed by the Cabinet for Health and Family Services as a social service clinician.

    Mattingly is the son of George and Phyllis Mattingly of Campbellsville.

    He is a 1992 graduate of Campbellsville University and is employed by the William Wright Co. as a senior planner.

  • Woman charged with assaulting police officer

    A Columbia woman has been arrested and charged with assault after she struck a police officer with her vehicle.

    According to a Campbellsville Police report, Tia Lawanda Watt, 29, was arrested Tuesday, March 25 at 2:15 p.m.

    The report states Campbellsville Police were investigating a shoplifting complaint at Green River Plaza when Officer Ben Riggs made contact with Watt in the parking lot.

    While speaking with Riggs, the report states, Watt attempted to flee and struck Riggs with her vehicle, knocking him to the ground.

  • Birth announcements

    Jennifer Carter and David Harmon of Campbellsville announce the birth of a daughter, Cheyanne Rose Harmon, at 12:31 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28 at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. She weighed 11 pounds, 5 3/4 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches long.

    Grandparents are Larry and Lettie Harmon of Greensburg, Lois Carter of Campbellsville and the late Robert Carter.

  • Taylor-Hayes

    Amanda Gayle Taylor and Michael Wayne Hayes, both of Campbellsville, will exchange wedding vows on Saturday, April 19.

    Taylor is the daughter of Mary Reardon of Lebanon and Johnny and Arlene Reardon of Perryville. Her grandparents are Welby and Marie Newton and Thomas and Irene Reardon, all of Lebanon.

    Hayes is the son of Ronnie and Debbie Hayes of Campbellsville. His grandparents are Cliff and Shirley Sturtivan and Sam and Lois Hayes, all of Campbellsville.
