  • Workshop addresses prescription drug problem

    Looking for a way to feed his addiction to painkillers, the man stuck his fingers into the moving blades of a lawnmower. A disturbing action, Dave Sallengs said, made even more so by the fact that it actually happened.

    Manager of the Office of the Inspector General's Drug Enforcement and Professional Practices Branch, Sallengs was in town Thursday to talk to health care professionals about the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting system, also known as KASPER.

  • National Day of Prayer

    They gathered on the steps, kneeled and spoke to God.

    The group also sang songs about America and read scriptures from the Bible. They prayed together for our community.

    Thursday was National Day of Prayer. In honor of the day, about 35 people gathered at the Taylor County Courthouse steps. The event was one of several around the nation offering inspirational music and prayer. Those who attended received an "I Prayed" sticker.

    A balloon launch, symbolizing the group's prayers being released to God, followed the ceremony.

  • Man charged with wanton endangerment

    A Campbellsville man has been arrested and charged with wanton endangerment and intimidating a witness.

    Richard McDonald, 34, of 3804 Barney School Road was arrested at 10:25 a.m. Thursday, April 24.

    According to Taylor County Sheriff John Shipp, sheriff's deputies were called to assist with a domestic situation. Shipp said McDonald had taken a loaded gun to someone's house. He said McDonald had gone to the residence to attempt to persuade the person involving a court proceeding.

  • Tigers still tops in MSC baseball

    Campbellsville University made it four straight Mid-South Conference Tournament baseball championships in a row with a 5-1 triumph at home over University of the Cumberlands on Thursday.

    After the Patriots (43-12) led 1-0 with a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers (24-18) tallied two in the seventh and three more in the eighth for the victory.

    In the seventh, Jason Beale was hit by a pitch and went to second on Matt Lepage's walk. Hector Urbaneja's sacrifice put runners at second and third.

  • Diver recovers truck from City Lake

    Diver Kenny Anderson retrieved a submerged Chevy Suburban from City Lake on Thursday afternoon.

    About two weeks ago, Campbellsville Police Lt. Terry Lile said officers had arrested Carl Brents of Campbellsville at Taylor Regional Hospital on a charge of public intoxication.

    After he was arrested, Lile said, Brents told police he had parked a Chevy Suburban at City Lake, but accidentally left it in gear, allowing the vehicle to roll into City Lake. The vehicle belonged to a family member, and Brents did not have permission to take the vehicle, Lile said.

  • Two charged in sealed indictments

    Two Campbellsville residents have been charged in indictments recently unsealed by a Taylor Circuit Court judge.

    A grand jury may seal an indictment if there is a possibility that the accused will try to evade police.

    Indicted were:

    u Joanne Louise Couch, 32, of 710 High Pine, Apt. 2B, who was charged with complicity to commit first-degree robbery.

    According to the indictment, Couch is accused of conspiring to commit robbery with a deadly weapon.

    Bond was set at $40,000 cash. If convicted, Couch could be sentenced to as much as 20 years in prison.

  • Man pleads guilty in federal court

    A Campbellsville man has pleaded guilty to possession of about 17 grams of crack cocaine in U.S. District Court.

    Henry Godfrey Barnett, 57, of 209 Baptist St. was indicted by a U.S. District Court Western District of Kentucky grand jury in August 2005 on a charge of knowingly and intentionally possessing, with the intent to distribute, 5 or more grams of crack.

    As a result, according to the indictment, Barnett was also charged with forfeiture, meaning, if found guilty, he would be required to forfeit $800 gained from selling the crack.

  • Man charged with receiving stolen property

    A Campbellsville man has been arrested and charged with receiving stolen property after he was found with a trailer taken from Marion County.

    James M. Perkins, 28, of 713 S. Columbia Ave., Apt. A, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 24.

    According to Perkins' arrest citation, the trailer was stolen from 68 Liquors in Marion County. The citation states Perkins was found in possession of the trailer during a traffic stop.

    On Friday, April 25, Perkins pleaded not guilty to the charge and was ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim.

  • Movin' on up

    Driving through Taylor County during the summer of 2006, Jerry Pippin had a revelation. Already raising a teenage son in Las Vegas, Pippin and his wife, Julie, were expecting twins. Pippin decided rural Kentucky might provide a better setting for his growing family.

    "The community was full of the nicest people," Jerry said. "I thought the place was beautiful."

    Jerry was here to help his brother, Dennis, with his family's move to Adair County. Returning home to Las Vegas, Jerry told his wife about the area.
