  • Grace Notes: Change of heart

    The headline caught my attention: 'I was given a young man's heart - and started craving beer and Kentucky Fried Chicken.'

    Claire Sylvia, a 47-year-old woman who lives somewhere in the UK, had a heart and lung transplant in 1988, receiving the organs from an 18-year-old boy who had been killed in a motorcycle accident.

    Shortly after the surgery she noticed she had acquired the characteristics and cravings of the donor. She wanted a beer, she told a reporter who had come to the hospital to interview her. (She didn't like beer before the surgery.)

  • Garage destroyed by fire

    A late-night fire destroyed a garage Monday in Black Gnat just at the Taylor/Green county line.

    According to a press release from the Greensburg/Green County Fire & Rescue, firefighters responded to a garage fire at 400 Black Gnat Road at 8:53 p.m. Firefighters discovered a fire in the attic of Andy Perkins' two-car garage. The garage was not attached to a home. The attic suffered extensive damage.

    Firefighters believe that the fire may have started outside and spread to the garage.

    Gov. Paul Patton has proclaimed this week (May 3-9) Community Readership Week.

    Jessie O. Underwood celebrated her 86th birthday with her family at Medco Center on April 27.

    Suzie Lynne Pike was the overnight guest of Anne and Paul Fraim of Campbellsville last Wednesday.

    Quenton Ford celebrated his fourth birthday recently at Little People Day Care & Learning Center. He is the son of Trent and Trina Ford of Campbellsville.

  • Central Kentucky Arts Series

    A crowd of about 40 came out Saturday evening to hear renowned saxophonist Ashu perform for the Central Kentucky Art Series' final event of the season.

    Ashu has toured as a concert soloist with symphony orchestras throughout the world.

    "Everyone I spoke with afterward was very pleased with Ashu and they were also disappointed with the small turnout," said CKAS member Carole Krieter.

    "Ashu said it didn't bother him that there were so few people as long as the crowd enjoyed him, that was all that mattered."

    Taylor County High School graduate and Transylvania University sophomore Cory Rash has been named an admissions assistant for the 2008-2009 school year.

    Admissions assistants represent the admissions office and Transylvania in an official capacity at on- and off-campus events, give campus tours and host prospective students.
