  • 'Tinseltown' fundraiser to help Taylor County youth

    The Center for Rural Development in Somerset has touched the lives of Taylor County students through its youth and arts education outreach programs.

    Twenty-two Taylor County students have graduated from Rogers Scholars, a youth leadership program for rising high school juniors, since the program was launched in 1998. Another local teen attended the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute in 2007.

    The Center also hosted a performance by the Lexington Children's Theatre on April 10 at Taylor County Elementary School.

  • 'One Class at a Time'

    A Campbellsville teacher has been honored by WBKO television station and Leachman Buick GMC for teaching her students the value of reading.

    Karen Skaggs, a second-grade teacher at Campbellsville Elementary School, was surprised in her classroom in March by WBKO reporter Lauren Hanson.

    Just after 1 o'clock that afternoon, Hanson and a news crew walked into Skaggs' classroom and presented her with a check in the amount of $500 for her efforts in motivating her students.

    As of the broadcast's airing, the second graders in Skaggs' class had read more than 4,000 books.

  • Castaas-Thompson wedding

    Marvie Castañas and Kevin Leon Thompson exchanged wedding vows on Saturday, April 12 in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

    The bride is the daughter of Peter and Edna Castañas.

    The groom is the son of Linda Kay Thompson, formerly of Greensburg and Campbellsville, and the late Leon Thompson. His grandparents are Lawrence and Bessie Thompson of Campbellsville and the late Hazel Warren.

    He is employed at MSD in Louisville.

    A reception will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 at Victory General Baptist Church, 4503 Rose Farm Drive in Louisville.

  • Farmers' Market opens for the new year

    Opening day at the Taylor County Farmers' Market got off to a slow start Saturday, as cool temperatures may have kept some folks at home.

    About five local farmers set up shop Saturday selling various items, including onions, herbs, flowers, honey, eggs and scented skin care products.

    Roger Benningfield, who was selling honey and onions, said opening day is typically slow. As the weather warms up and more products are harvested, attendance usually increases, he said.

  • Hash is teen scholarship winner

    Allie Shae Hash was crowned winner of the 2008 Miss Capitol City of the Bluegrass Outstanding Teen Scholarship Pageant.

    Hash also won the individual talent award with her vocal performance of "Don't Rain on My Parade."

    She earned superior ratings in each of the following categories: personal interview, physical fitness, talent, formal wear and on-stage performance.

    Hash received a crown, a $200 cash scholarship, a $150 gift certificate to Modiste and other prizes.

  • TCHS Council accepting parent nominations

    Taylor County High School PTSO is accepting nominations for site-based decision making parent council members for the 2008-2009 school year.

    TCHS parents may pick up a nomination form in the front office at Taylor County High School from April 28 through May 9.

    The qualifications for a SBDM parent council member are being a parent, step-parent or foster parent of a student enrolled in the school during the parent's term of council service.

  • Mmmm!Annual pancake breakfast is Saturday

    It takes more than 400 pounds of sausage, about 300 pounds of pancake mix and countless volunteers to make the annual breakfast happen.

    The annual Campbellsville/Taylor County Fire Department pancake breakfast is set for Saturday at the fire department.

    According to Taylor County Volunteer Fire Chief George Wilson, the fire departments have hosted the event every year he has worked at the fire department - since 1967.

    "It [actually] goes back a long time before that," Wilson said.

    He thinks the event originally dates back 55 to 60 years.

  • Tebbs Bend Historians bring home state awards

    The Tebb's Bend Historians recently attended the annual Kentucky Junior Historical Society convention in Frankfort. The club brought home many awards from the competitions.

    One club member, Mary Tress Eastham, was elected as state junior representative. The awards for the club are:

    First place - Sarah Januski, Division II 2D art and research paper; Sierra Hall, Division I test and photo essay; Savhanna Pearson, Division II speech; Carrie Mason, Andrea Nolley and Megan Dudley, Division III performance (awarded after an error in score reporting).
