  • Finley man gets 18 years for manslaughter

    Russell Lee Wood Jr. pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter last month, and he has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for that crime.

    Wood, 51, of 7765 St. Joe Road in Finley, was indicted for murder after he shot his mother, Ida Wood, in June of 2006.

    Wood pleaded guilty to the manslaughter charge with a note that he was mentally ill.

    Marion Circuit Judge Doughlas George sentenced Wood to 18 years at the Kentucky State Reformatory. Wood will be sent to the nursing wing of the prison because of his physical and mental condition, George wrote.

  • Wording changes on alcohol question

    Voters within the City limits will see a slightly different alcohol question when they go to the polls on May 20.

    A portion of the question requiring that any alcohol sold be served in conjunction with a meal was omitted from circulated petitions and news reports on the issue.

    Taylor County Clerk Mark Carney said he was unaware of the stipulation until he spoke with County Attorney Craig Cox recently.

    "This was the first time this question was asked in Kentucky and we all missed it," Carney said.

  • Garage destroyed by fire

    A late-night fire destroyed a garage Monday in Black Gnat just at the Taylor/Green county line.

    According to a press release from the Greensburg/Green County Fire & Rescue, firefighters responded to a garage fire at 400 Black Gnat Road at 8:53 p.m. Firefighters discovered a fire in the attic of Andy Perkins' two-car garage. The garage was not attached to a home. The attic suffered extensive damage.

    Firefighters believe that the fire may have started outside and spread to the garage.

  • Central Kentucky Arts Series

    A crowd of about 40 came out Saturday evening to hear renowned saxophonist Ashu perform for the Central Kentucky Art Series' final event of the season.

    Ashu has toured as a concert soloist with symphony orchestras throughout the world.

    "Everyone I spoke with afterward was very pleased with Ashu and they were also disappointed with the small turnout," said CKAS member Carole Krieter.

    "Ashu said it didn't bother him that there were so few people as long as the crowd enjoyed him, that was all that mattered."

  • And ... they're off!

    Taylor County was home to its own Derby race Friday afternoon - at Taylor County Elementary School.

    Students in Shana Crabtree's, Michelle Murphy's and Brandi Graham's third-grade classes at TCES raced Friday afternoon on stick horses.

    The classes spent the week making their stick horses as well as Derby hats.

  • Campbellsville woman receives pretrial diversion

    Katisha Wise, 20, of 216 Lincoln Avenue in Campbellsville pleaded guilty to two counts of reckless homicide in Marion County last month. The case originated from a two-vehicle collision in which two passengers in Wise's vehicle died.

    Wise was indicted in September 2007 on two counts of second-degree manslaughter, DUI and possession of marijuana less than 8 ounces in connection with a fatal accident that occurred in Marion County.

    She received five years of supervised pretrial diversion, but that is conditional on her admission to drug court.

  • Campbellsville man seeks Senate seat

    Campbellsville resident James E. Rice is one of seven Democrats seeking the Primary nomination for U.S. Senator, an office currently held by Republican Mitch McConnell.

    Rice will face Michael Cassaro, David Lynn Williams, Kenneth Stepp, Greg Fischer, Bruce Lunsford and David Wylie on the Democratic ticket. The winner of that race will face either McConnell or his challenger, Daniel Essek.

  • FEMA funds available for emergency shelter and food programs

    Taylor County will receive $15,546 in FEMA funds to supplement emergency shelter and food programs in the area.

    Local groups may apply for Federal Emergency Management Agency funds. To apply, groups must be non-profit, have an accounting system and conduct audits annually, practice non-discrimination, have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food or shelter services and, if the group is a private voluntary organization, must have a voluntary board.

  • Farmers get additional 8-9 cents per pound for tobacco

    Tobacco growers will get a raise after all, but it's not the victory many were hoping for.

    "It's kind a token increase," Taylor County farmer Bernie Cave says. "It's not a victory, but it's definitely a step in the right direction."

    Cave, along with Marion County farmer Joe Spaulding, organized a series of meetings with area tobacco farmers who were not satisfied with tobacco giant Philip Morris' contract offering.
