  • Two enter pleas in crime ring case

    The last of five Campbellsville residents accused of operating a crime ring have pleaded guilty to charges against them.

    The five were indicted by a Taylor County grand jury in February 2007.

    According to the indictments, the defendants were accused of conspiring together in the theft and distribution of stolen property in December 2006.

    Indicted were:

    - Joseph Q. Seadler, 24, of 420 Kenny St.

    - Megan Michelle Wise, 20, of 403 Smith Ridge Road.

    - Timothy Wayne Crum, 28, also of 420 Kenny St.

    - Kimberly Lynn Carney, 27, also of 420 Kenny St.

  • Lt. governor is new chamber speaker

    The annual Chamber banquet is Thursday, June 5 but with a different guest speaker than was on the original invitation.

    Gov. Steve Beshear will be out of the state that night and taking his place will be Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo.

    A reception will be at 6 p.m. in the Student Activity Center on the campus of Campbellsville University. Dinner will be at 7 p.m.

  • Vote count off by 132 ballots

    More than 100 votes from Tuesday night's primary election were not counted, but while the votes narrowed a few victory margins, election results remain the same.

    Taylor County Clerk Mark Carney noticed a zero from the New City East precinct when putting together his voter turnout list Thursday morning.

    "I realized that the card from one of the new machines had not been read," Carney said.

    Carney checked the machine and found the card still inside. He contacted the State Board of Elections, who assured him everything was OK.

  • Grant funds help local cemeteries

    They're our final resting places and where loved ones gather throughout the years to remember the dead. Many will meet there today.

    They're also the focus of a five-member committee created to help preserve the nearly 350 local burial grounds.

    The Taylor County Cemetery Preservation Committee was formed during former Taylor County Judge/Executive Paul Patton's administration.

  • Grand jury indicts couple who had venomous snakes at home

    The Campbellsville couple who were arrested in March when Fish and Wildlife officers found venomous snakes and alligators at their home have been indicted on criminal charges.

    Freddie E. Stone Jr., 36, and Amy Rae Stone, 37, both of 552 Mt. Carmel Road were indicted Tuesday by a Taylor County grand jury.

    The Stones were both charged with four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment.

  • City puts EDA funding request on hold

    The local industrial recruiter's funding increase request is back on the table, but only provisionally.

    In a special meeting Wednesday, Campbellsville City Council opted to include in its $15.5 million 2008-2009 budget the Campbellsville/Taylor County Economic Development Authority's request for a $50,000 annual increase. However, Council members voted to only consider the request after Taylor Fiscal Court reconsiders it in January.

    Mayor Brenda Allen said "it would be up to the City Council" to decide what to do after the Fiscal Court revisits the request.

  • Voters say yes to alcohol

    Turnout was higher than expected Tuesday as nearly 7,000 Taylor Countians took to the polls to cast their votes.

    Awaiting a voting machine cartridge from Mannsville before results could be tallied, Taylor County Clerk Mark Carney told a small crowd gathered at the courthouse Tuesday evening that candidates and the alcohol issue encouraged more residents to participate in the election.

    "We had an 8 percent turnout for the last presidential primary," Carney said. "We have 40 percent for this primary. The issues and the candidates brought out the voters."

  • High school seniors set to graduate

    This year, 271 students will graduate from Campbellsville Independent and Taylor County High schools in ceremonies a week apart. In the past, the ceremonies were usually hosted just an hour apart.

    Taylor County's school year went a week longer than Campbellsville Schools, which also necessitated two Project Graduation events.

    Campbellsville High's graduation kicks things off tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the school's Hamilton Auditorium. CHS will graduate 66 students this year, the same number as last year.

  • Taxi service gets grant to begin operation

    Taylor Countians in need of a ride will soon have a taxi service to take them where they need to go.

    At last week's regular Fiscal Court meeting, Taylor County Judge/Executive Eddie Rogers told magistrates that Rural Transit Enterprises Coordinated Inc. has received a grant to begin operating a taxi service in Taylor County on July 1.

    Since January, Rogers said, he has received several requests for a taxi service in Taylor County.

    The News-Journal has received several anonymous letters throughout the past few years explaining the need and asking for such a service.
