  • The annual Compassionate Friends Worldwide Candle Lighting is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 9.

    The U.S. Senate has, for several years, joined in the Worldwide Candle Lighting remembrance by unanimously passing resolutions at the request of the Compassionate Friends, declaring the second Sunday in December of each year as National Children's Memorial Day.

  • Weavers Joyce Baker, left, of Campbellsville, and her mother, Doris Baker of Greensburg, are displaying hand-woven baskets on exhibit at Campbellsville University's Art Gallery through Dec. 14. The show, titled "Three Women Weaving," also features the work of another daughter, Carren Hattersley of Nicholasville. They have been working together for three years.   • Bryten Close celebrated his first birthday on Sept. 22 at his home. His parents are Andy and Brandy Close of Campbellsville. Grandparents are Sandy and Tim Cash and Mike and Marcie Close, all of Campbellsville.

  • Kyle Chappell celebrated his fifth birthday with family and friends on Nov. 10. He is the son of Kevin and Cindy Chappell.   • Erika Nicole Gordon of Campbellsville and Cody Blake Adams of Elk Horn exchanged wedding vows on Saturday, Sept. 15 at St. Mark United Methodist Church.

    Todd Davis performed the ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Kenny and Patty Gordon of Campbellsville. Her grandparents are Morris and Avon Cundiff and Barbara Gordon, all of Campbellsville, and the late Kenneth Gordon.

    The groom is the son of Danny and Donna Adams of Elk Horn. His grandparents are Robert and Sally Ridner of Somerset and the late William and Verla Adams.

  • Jordan D. Kearney has joined the United States Army under the Delayed Entry Program.

    The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay entering active duty for up to one year.

    The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $50,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic military training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career job specialty prior to being assigned to their first permanent duty station.

  • God's Friendship Chapel has a new pastor, Bro. Dennis Pennick and his wife Brenda, formerly of Greensburg.

  • Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz will visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church on Sunday.

    Kurtz will be on hand during the 10 a.m. Mass and special consecration of the parish's new altar.

    A reception will follow in the parish hall.

    My soul was in anguish. I knew exactly how King David felt when he wrote his laments, wondering how long he had to wait for God to answer his prayers.

    I was 11 years old and I had been waiting my entire life to shave my legs. However, my mom said I needed to wait, but what do moms know? I had a forest growing on my lower limbs that needed razing - right then.

  • Saturday is World AIDS Day, a day to increase awareness about HIV/AIDS, to fight prejudice, improve education and to remind people that HIV has not gone away.

    It is also a day to remember those infected and affected with HIV/AIDS and to memorialize the many loved ones who have passed away.
