  • Communion fun 101

    When I was little I used to play church with my dolls and stuffed animals.

    I'd take gooey white Wonder Bread, smash it flat and tear it into round communion wafers. Then I'd pour Kool-Aid into colorful shiny aluminum tumblers, the kind that used to sweat when they're cold, and that was my wine.

    I'd say the words, "the body of Christ" and "the blood of Christ," and I'd have my holy snack and then go on to play something else - Chutes and Ladders with my sister or put on my roller skates and skate around the block.

  • CU youth ministry conference discusses ways to engage youth in churches

    "Youth in churches actually want more from their youth ministry experience," said the Rev. Joe Ball, who works with the Youth Ministry and Sunday School Department at the Kentucky Baptist Convention, as he talked at Campbellsville University's Youth Ministry Conference on Nov. 15 in Ransdell Chapel.

    Forty-two youth ministers and others interested in the field from Kentucky and Indiana attended the session.

  • Friendship Baptist plans holiday events

    Friendship Baptist Church has several upcoming events planned. The church is located at 5411 Bengal Road in Campbellsville.

    On Sunday, Dec. 7, the Oneida Baptist Institute Choir will be leading worship during the 11 a.m. service.

    The Oneida choir travels the state and is in great demand. The community is invited to come and enjoy this special event.

    Friendship Baptist Church will also host its annual "Kids Christmas Celebration" on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 2 to 3 p.m.

  • East Campbellsville Church of God to stage 'A Christian Carol'

    East Campbellsville Church of God will present "A Christian Carol - From Humbug to Hallelujah!"

    The drama will be performed on Saturdays, Dec. 13 and 20 and Sunday, Dec. 21.

    The community is encouraged to attend. Organizers say the drama will make a "perfect" family outing. Youth groups or other large groups are asked to call 849-4192 for reservations.

    East Campbellsville Church of God is located on Eastport Road, off of East Broadway.

    Admission is free, and all performances will begin at 7 p.m.

  • Cooperative program leaders honored

    Kentucky Baptists honored two individuals and several churches for outstanding leadership and support of the Cooperative Program during an afternoon celebration at the Kentucky Baptist Convention's annual meeting on Nov. 11.

    Anna White and Dr. James Jones each received the Distinguished Cooperative Program Leadership Award for their leadership in supporting the Cooperative Program, Southern Baptists' method for collectively funding mission and ministry efforts.

  • Spurlington youth donate to Toys for Tots

    Spurlington United Methodist Church children's group and friends decorated pumpkins and auctioned them off on Oct. 11. Proceeds from the auction, totaling $760, went to Toys for Tots.     Gracious God,

    In this time of flux and uncertainty, when our nation and our neighbors are in turmoil, searching for peace and prosperity or just a chance to catch a breath, you remain constant and sovereign.

    You are King over our sorrows as well as our joys. You are Lord over all that concerns us in the daytime, all that keeps us awake at night, all that drives us to our knees. In that, we can rest and trust and renew our strength. In that, in your sovereignty, we can give you thanks.

  • Smyzer speaks on mercy at CU's chapel

    "There are some situations, some state of affairs, some current circumstances that we deal with on a regular basis, but if these things were not there, it really don't mean nothing."

    In a message titled "When It Really Don't Mean Nothing," Dr. Matthew E. Smyzer Jr. preached on Oct. 29 at Campbellsville University's chapel service.

    Smyzer is the executive director of the Baptist Fellowship Center and pastor of Beargrass Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville.

  • Finishing well

    If there's such a thing as a perfect day for a funeral, Friday was it. Puffy white clouds dotted the blue sky, the temperature a perfect 75 degrees.

    The friends and family of Teresa Rosebrough packed the church for a triumphantly joyful, yet mournfully sad memorial service.

    At 50, our friend T lost her three-and-a-half-year battle with ovarian cancer.

  • Corn hole tournament set for Dec. 13

    Audience 1 Sports will host a corn hole tournament on Saturday, Dec. 13 at the Campbellsville Community Center in Veterans Memorial Park.

    Payout will be based on the number of teams in the tournament.

    Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the tournament starting at 10. Single entries cost $15 each and doubles are $30 per team.
