  • OLPH to host annual World Day of Prayer service

    Women, men, college students and children in more than 170 countries and regions will celebrate World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 6.

    The women of Papua, New Guinea have written the World Day of Prayer 2009 service around the theme, "In Christ, there are many members, yet one body."

    They welcome all to Papua, New Guinea, a land of many languages, cultures, traditions and beliefs. Though many of its communities experience isolation due to rugged terrain, there is diversity.

    The women say, "By God's grace, we are able to be united."

  • Like mother, like daughter: curse or blessing?

    Along with zillions of other people, my daughter, Alison, writes a blog.

    As The Neurotic Housewife, Alison writes about her life as a stay-at-home mom, and I've thoroughly enjoyed getting to know this side of her in a horrifying sort of way.

    It's like looking into a mirror.

    Oscar Wilde once said, "All women become like their mothers. That is their tragedy."

    As my girls grew up, I often taunted them with that. Oh yeah? You think I'm a fruitcake? Just wait until you get older and you find yourself doing the exact same things.

  • Ash Wednesday joint service planned

    Three local congregations will observe the beginning of the Lenten season, the 40 days preceding Easter, with an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. on Feb. 25 at Bethel First Presbyterian Church.

    The church is located at 502 E. Main St. in Campbellsville.

    St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Fannie Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, and the host congregation will join in the traditional Ash Wednesday liturgy and imposition of ashes.

  • CU to host sacred choir on Feb. 27

    Campbellsville University will host The Elizabethtown Area Sacred Community Choir on Friday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ransdell Chapel.

    The concert is part of CU's Baptist Heritage Series that culminates in the "Celebrating 400 Years of Baptist Heritage" event April 2 at the Louisville campus. The Robertson Worship Endowment is also a sponsor of the concert.

    The performance, titled "Honoring Baptists," is free and open to the public.

  • 'We all is homeless'

    I promised Gator that I would write about him. His real name is Mike, and he lives in the woods in a camp with some other people.

    I only met him briefly, which is par for the course for reporters. We get to know people long enough to get what we need for a story, but often not long enough to care.

    I'm talking about myself here, and the truth is I'm not proud of it. But I'm telling you this because God's been chipping away at my uncaring, although he's got a long way to go.

  • Pleasant Union plans black history program

    Pleasant Union Baptist Church will host a black history program on Sunday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.

    Teresa Haskins Smith of Louisville will be the guest speaker. Smith is the daughter of Willie Haskins and the late JoAnn Haskins.

    Music will be provided by Campbellsville University's African American Leadership League.

  • A priceless, tasty faith

    The first thing I asked Sean Gebhard was, "Do people think you're crazy?"

    Sean runs the Upper Room Café in Mount Dora, a cute little town about 40 miles east of where I live in central Florida.

    I had heard about his "Holy Spirit-filled café" upstairs in the historic Renaissance Building, and the last time we were in Mount Dora I stopped in to see it for myself.

  • CU to host illusionist at convo

    Campbellsville University will host David Garrard, an illusionist who is minister to children at St. Matthews Baptist Church in Louisville, for chapel Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 10 a.m. in Ransdell Chapel. The public is invited to attend this event.

    Garrard is in his 32nd year as minister to children at St. Matthews Baptist Church. He has served as an illusionist for 40 years, after having become interested in the business when he was 12 years old.

  • World Day of Prayer organizational meeting is Sunday

    An organizational meeting for the local World Day of Prayer observance will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.

    Those interested in participating in this ecumenical prayer service are invited to attend.

    World Day of Prayer will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 6 at OLPH Catholic Church.

  • Greensburg church taking Angel Food Ministries orders

    Greensburg United Methodist Church will continue taking orders for Angel Food Ministries through February.

    This month, the regular menu, which costs $30, consists of 1 1/2 pounds of sirloin strip steaks, 2 pounds chicken breasts, 1 pound boneless pork chops, 2 pounds chicken nuggets, 28 ounces Salisbury steak, 12 ounces sliced bacon, 1 pound hot dogs, 1 pound stir fry, 1 pound carrots, 10 ounces peanut butter, 32 ounces shelf stable milk, 35 ounces French fries, 7 ounces macaroni and cheese, 1 pound rice, 1 pound bean soup mix, dozen eggs and a dessert item.
