    Should you see someone wearing a white ribbon, you might ask them about their family.

    November is National Adoption Awareness Month.

    In Kentucky, there are more than 970 children in out-of-home care and awaiting public adoption. There are a total of 2,042 children who can't be reunited with families due to abuse, neglect and other safety and welfare issues.

  • Toys for Kids plans fundraisers

    The Campbellsville-Taylor County Fire Department has three fundraisers planned to collect money and toys for its "Toys for Kids" program.

    The first event, the annual "Toys for Kids" chili cook-off, was Nov. 17.

    The second event, the 11th annual "Toys for Kids" dance, will be Saturday, Dec. 1 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the American Legion. Admission is $5.

    The last event, the "Toys for Kids" celebrity auction, is planned for Thursday, Dec. 6 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Miss Kentucky pageants nearing

    \You or someone you know could be the next Miss USA or Miss Teen USA.

    Connie Clark Harrison, Kentucky director for the Miss Teen USA and Miss USA pageants, the official preliminaries to the national Miss USA and Miss Teen USA pageants, announced recently that registration is open for the 2008 state pageant, which will be at the Center for Rural Development in Somerset on Nov. 23-25.

  • TRH to host lung cancer program

    Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers. In 2007, lung cancer will account for about 15 percent of all cancer diagnoses and 29 percent of all cancer deaths.

    It is the second most diagnosed cancer in men and women (after prostate and breast, respectively), but it is the No. 1 cause of death from cancer each year in both men and women.

    Because lung cancer can take years to develop, it is mostly found in older people. The average age of a person receiving a lung cancer diagnosis is 69 years.

  • TRH to host grief class

    Taylor Regional Hospital will offer the class "Kids Hurt Too - Helping Children Cope with Loss," on Wednesday, Nov. 28 from 10 a.m. to noon.

    The class will take place in the TRH Learning & Resource Center at 125B Kingswood Drive and will be taught by Cynthia L. White.

    This workshop is for nurses, doctors, social workers, counselors, parents and other adults who are interested in gaining knowledge and skills in how children grieve and how to help them cope with loss.

  • Holiday Helpline open through Dec. 7

    The Holiday Helpline will be open again this year to coordinate local charitable giving during the Christmas season.

    Organizers of the helpline say the idea is to make sure that no one is overlooked, while at the same time preventing duplication.

    The Holiday Helpline will be open for calls from 1 to 4:30 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 7. All calls need to be made during that time.

    The telephone number to call is 469-1369.

    Organizers said they want to emphasize that the helpline is for families who would not otherwise have Christmas.

  • CU to present opera

    The Campbellsville University Opera Workshop will present "Gianni Schicchi" on Nov. 17-19.

    Shows are Saturday and Monday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

    All performances are in Gheens Recital Hall. Tickets are available and must be reserved by calling 789-5237. General admission is $5. Faculty, staff and students are free.

  • Church plans community dinner

    Thanksgiving is about being thankful - and giving. And one local church spends the Thanksgiving holiday doing both.

    For many years now, Bethel First Presbyterian Church has hosted a traditional Thanksgiving dinner for the community. And many volunteers from all over the community come together to help.

    The dinner is free. It is for those in need, for those who are alone, or for those who would just like to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner with others.

    The traditional meal will be served in the church's fellowship hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving day.

    The annual Campbellsville Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 p.m.

  • Christmas ornaments on sale now

    The Campbellsville Renaissance/Historic Preservation Commission is selling a new Christmas ornament this year featuring Bethel First Presbyterian Church.

    The church is etched on a flat glass ornament with a gold ribbon. The history of the church is included in a gold gift box.

    A limited number of ornaments are available for sale at Tucker Diamonds and Gold, Merle Norman, Mitchell's Men's Wear, Purcell's Business Products, Chandler's Office Supply, Campbellsville City Hall and the Team Taylor County office on Broadway.

    Cost is $10 each.
