  • 'Tinseltown' fundraiser to help Taylor County youth

    The Center for Rural Development in Somerset has touched the lives of Taylor County students through its youth and arts education outreach programs.

    Twenty-two Taylor County students have graduated from Rogers Scholars, a youth leadership program for rising high school juniors, since the program was launched in 1998. Another local teen attended the Entrepreneurial Leadership Institute in 2007.

    The Center also hosted a performance by the Lexington Children's Theatre on April 10 at Taylor County Elementary School.

  • Pageant will benefit Green County Junior Miss

    Green County Junior Miss will host a spring Mr. and Ms. Sunburst pageant on Saturday, April 26.

    Categories will be available for boys ages 6 months to 4 years and girls ages 6 months to 18 years.

    Registration is $20 with additional categories for best hair, best dress, most photogenic, prettiest smile and prettiest eyes for $5 each.

    Prizes will be awarded to the winner, first runner-up, second runner-up and individual winners.

    The pageant will begin at 10 p.m. ET at Greensburg Elementary School. Participants may register up to 30 minutes before the pageant.

  • Workshop for veterans offered April 25

    A workshop for veterans of all military services will be offered Friday, April 25.

    The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. at 1425 Old Hodgenville Road and is for veterans and their significant others.

    A national service officer will be available to answer questions. Lunch will be served.

  • St. Jude benefit poker run is April 19

    A St. Jude Children's Research Hospital benefit poker run is set for Saturday, April 19 at Green River Plaza behind Burger King.

    The event is sponsored by the Bridge to Faith Motorcycle Club.

    By participating in the event, participants will help raise funds for children in the world who are stricken with diseases like cancer, AIDS and sickle cell anemia. Funds raised will help St. Jude in its ongoing fight against childhood cancer and other catastrophic diseases.

    Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The entry fee is $10.

  • CU students to perform April 19-20

    "Just a Breeze to a Hurricane," an original contemporary musical production written by Campbellsville University senior composition major Matthew Hodge of Taylorsville, will be performed at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, April 19 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20 in The Gheens Recital Hall.

    "I'm going to college now!" opens the show and sets the stage for the production that follows the lives of a close-knit group of friends as they journey through college.

  • Mid-Kentucky Chorus spring concert is April 17

    The Mid-Kentucky Chorus spring concert will feature the multi-faceted sounds of the chorus and will serve as one of the opening events celebrating the Lincoln Bicentennial.

    Started as the Community Chorus at St. Catharine, at least seven counties are represented with the majority coming from Marion, Washington and Nelson counties.

  • CU Wind Ensemble to perform April 22

    The Campbellsville University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Director of Bands Dr. David M. McCullough, will present its spring concert on Tuesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. in the University's Ransdell Chapel.

    The concert is free and open to the public.

    "The program will feature some of the greatest works of the wind band repertoire and should offer an exciting concert experience for audience and performers alike," McCullough said.

  • CU to present aquatic symposium

    Campbellsville University is hosting the third annual Upper Green River Aquatic Fauna Symposium on Friday, April 18 at 1 p.m. in the Banquet Hall of the Student Union Building.

    Dr. Richie Kessler, associate professor of biology/environmental studies program coordinator, said the symposium is free and open to the public, especially for visiting researchers, faculty and students.

  • Library to host Earth Day celebration

    The Taylor County Public Library will host an Earth Day celebration on Tuesday, April 22 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

    Stories, crafts and refreshments will be available.

    The library is now open until 8 p.m. each Tuesday and Thursday.

  • LWC to offer cultural events that celebrate musical and medical pioneers

    Two upcoming events at Lindsey Wilson College will offer area residents an opportunity to enjoy compositions by musical pioneers and then learn about a medical pioneer from Kentucky.

    The Green River Trio will perform pieces by Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms on Sunday, April 20. Then on Tuesday, April 22, a living history event about medical pioneer Dr. Ephraim McDowell will be performed.

    Both events - which are part of the Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series - are free and open to the public.
