It's hard to believe it's been a year. And what a year it's been.
I will admit it; I'm one of those who thought it wouldn't happen. We would never have enough money. People wouldn't want higher taxes to pay for it. But here we are, and it's all paid for.
The new Taylor County Public Library opened its doors last March, after years and years of planning, saving and hoping.
And on Tuesday, March 18, library staff members will host a party to celebrate the first birthday in their new building.
Library staff members have hosted countless events - all free - this past year for residents of all ages. And the purpose has been two-fold, to learn and have fun. That's what our library is all about.
From family cooking classes to learning about black history to discussing books with others, there truly is something for everyone at the library.
There are corners to read quietly, magazines to peruse, coffee to sip and displays of new books. There is an area for patrons to just sit and read. We don't take time to do that as much as we should.
Library staff members have hosted many summer reading events, taught us crafts, self-defense and so much more.
A now a Friends of the Library group has formed to help the library offer even more free events for the community.
I encourage you, if you haven't been to the library, to go and see what you're missing. Where else could a person go to learn and have fun for free?
Since opening its new building, more people have used the library than ever before. That's something to make us proud.
The library belongs to us. Our tax dollars pay to keep the doors opening, so we should all use it.
Thanks to library board members and library personnel for making the last year happen. I can't wait to see what is in store for the next year and the many more to come.
So, pull up a chair and get a good book. Get a library card and ask staff members to recommend a good story.
