Washington completes season sweep over Lady Cards

-A A +A

Commanderettes hit 16 of first 17 free throws, TC goes 12-24

By Bobby Brockman

Taylor County’s Lady Cardinals began their 2013-14 campaign with a two-point loss (47-45) at home to Washington County and suffered another two-point setback (50-48) on Tuesday in Springfield to the Commanderettes.
The Lady Cardinals held brief leads at 6-4 and 10-9 after a MaKayla Sabo basket, but Washington County took the lead for good on Jennifer Keene’s three-point play late in the first quarter.
Hannah Howard’s three brought coach Whitney Hooper’s team within two (16-14) in the second quarter. However, the Commanderettes still led 20-19 at the intermission and 33-28 at the third-period stop.
Haley Wright tallied 12 of her team-high 17 points in the final frame and Taylor County cut the lead to three twice down the stretch. But, Nick Brizendine hit nine of 10 fourth-quarter free throws to permit the home squad (4-15) to hold off the Lady Cards.
Taylor County (11-12) hosts Thomas Nelson tonight before playing at LaRue County in a girl/boy twinbill on Friday. The Lady Cards finish the regular season with a road game at Nelson County on Tuesday.
